Skipping Suhoor

Some of us are too lazy or sleepy to eat Suhoor or just don’t think it’s important. Even if you don’t feel like having a lot of food, just eat something little; a few dates, even a glass of water. That’s because the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Eat suhoor for in suhoor there is blessing” (1)

It was narrated from Jaabir that the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Whoever wants to fast, let him eat something for suhoor.” (2)

Stopping Suhoor at ‘Imsaak’

Some people stop eating Suhoor 10-15 minutes earlier than the time of Fajr to observe ‘Imsaak’. They think they cannot eat beyond that time and that it would be wrong if they did.

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen was asked about some timetables which give the time of imsaak as being approximately one-quarter of an hour before Fajr. He said:

This is a kind of bid3ah (innovation) which has no basis in the Sunnah. Rather the Sunnah is to do the opposite. Allaah allows us to eat until dawn: “and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)” [al-Baqarah 2:187]

And the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “….eat and drink until you hear the adhaan of Ibn Umm Maktoom, for he does not give the adhaan until dawn comes.”

This ‘imsaak’ which some of the people practice, is an addition to what Allaah has prescribed, so it is false. It is a kind of extremism in religion, and the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:
“Those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed.” (3)

Not fasting if they missed Suhoor

Sometimes, our alarm doesn’t go off on time and we miss the time for eating, just barely waking up with the adhaan. I’m sure this has happened to all of us one time or another. In this situation, there are some people who are too scared to fast if they miss Suhoor. They think they will feel too weak during the day or that, by default, missing Suhoor automatically means NO fast that day.

But, if you think about it, unless a person has a genuine health problem, it is not such a big deal after all. What if you missed a few morsels of food? You’ll be fine in-shaa’-Allaah. Alhamdulillaah most of us have enough fat stored in our bodies to keep us going for several days without food!

Remember, obedience to Allaah takes precedence over everything. 

Shaykh Salih Al-Munajjid said: “If a Muslim does not eat suhoor or does not wake up for Fajr, this is not counted as a reason for him not to fast.” (4)

Saying the intention to fast ‘out loud’ or saying a specific dua to start fasting

The intention is an action of the heart. We should resolve in our heart that we are going to fast tomorrow. That is all we need. It is not prescribed by the Shari’ah for us to say out loud, “I intend to fast”, “I will fast tomorrow” or other phrases that have been innovated by some people.

Also, there is no specific du3aa’ to be recited at the time of starting the fast in the correct Sunnah. Whatever du3aa’  you may see on some papers or Ramadaan calendars, etc. is not from sunnah.

Delaying breaking fast

Some people wait until the adhaan finishes or even several minutes after that, just to be ‘on the safe side’. However, the Sunnah is to hasten to break the fast, which means breaking fast whenever the adhaan starts, right after the sun has set. Aa3ishah radi Allaahu 3Anha said: This is what the Messenger of AllaahSallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam used to do.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“The people will continue to do well so long as they hasten to break the fast.” (5)

Al-Nawawi said: 

This hadeeth urges us to hasten to break the fast as soon as it is established that the sun has set. What this means is that the ummah will continue to be in a sound state and they will be fine so long as they continue to adhere to this Sunnah. (6)

Eating continuously until the time for Maghrib is up

Some people put so much food in their plates when breaking their fast and continue eating, enjoying dessert, drinking tea, etc., until they miss Maghrib. That is obviously not right.

What one should do is to hasten to break the fast by eating small morsels that will calm one’s hunger, then get up to pray, then if one wishes, one may come back and eat more.

 This is what the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam used to do. (7)

Missing the golden chance of having your Du3aa’ accepted

The prayer of the fasting person is guaranteed to be accepted at the time of breaking fast. The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

 “There are three whose du3aa’ will not be rejected, …………..the fasting person when he breaks his fast…” (8)

Instead of sitting down and making Du3aa’ at this precious time, some people forego this beautiful chance, and are too busy frying ‘samosas’, talking, setting the food, filling their plates and pouring drinks into their glasses and they lose this golden opportunity.

Think about it…. Is food more important than the chance to have your sins forgiven or the fulfillment of your Du3aa’?

Not fasting because of exams or work

Exams or work is NOT one of the excuses allowed by the Shari3ah to not fast. You can do your studying and revision at night if it is too hard to do that during the day.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked about that and he replied: 

It is not permissible for an adult of sound mind to break the fast during Ramadaan because of exams, because that is not one of the excuses permitted in Islam. Rather he has to fast and do his studying at night if it is hard for him to do it during the day. Those who are in charge of exams should be kind to the students and arrange the exams at a time other than Ramadaan, so as to serve two purposes: the purpose of fasting and that of giving students time to prepare for the exams.

The Standing Committee said: 

It is not permissible to break the fast for the reason you mentioned, rather that is haraam, because it is not included among the excuses for which it is permissible to break the Ramadaan fast. (9)

Also remember that pleasing and obeying Allaah is much more important than ‘good grades’. Besides, if you will fulfil your obligation to fast, even if you have to study, Allaah will make it easy for you and help you in everything you do.

“Whosoever fears Allaah, He will appoint for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect, Allaah is Sufficient for whosoever puts his trust in Him.” (Soorah at-Talaaq, v: 2-3)

Fasting and not wearing Hijaab

Women’s observing hijab in front of non-mahram men and covering their faces is something that is obligatory as is indicated by the Book of our Lord and the Sunnah of our Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam. (10) The correct view is that a woman is obliged to cover her entire body, even the face and hands. (11)

If a woman does not wear hijab, then she is disobeying her Lord thereby, but her fast is still valid, because sins, including not wearing hijab, do not invalidate the fast, but they detract from its reward (12)

Lavish Iftaar parties

Although inviting each other for breaking fast is something good and encouraged, some people go to extremes with lavish ‘Iftaar parties’ with all sorts of disobedience to Allaah, from flirting, mixing of the sexes and hijaab-less women, to show-off and extravagance, to heedlessness to Salaah and Taraaweeh, to even music and dancing.

Mixing fasting and dieting

DO NOT make the mistake of fasting with the intention to diet. That is one of the biggest mistakes some of us make, especially the sisters.

Fasting is an act of worship and should only and only, be for the sake of Allah alone. Otherwise, mixing it with the intention of dieting may become a form of (minor) Shirk. Sure, there are always added benefits of obeying Allaah, one of them being, losing weight while fasting. That comes in automatically, so reap the benefits but don’t make it part of your intention. If the side benefits come, they come. If they don’t, that shouldn’t stop you from obeying Allaah and fulfilling your duty.

Fighting over the number of Raka3ah of Taraweeh

There is no specific number of rak’ahs for Taraweeh prayer, rather it is permissible to do a little or a lot. Both 8 and 20 are okay.

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen said:

“No one should be denounced for praying eleven or twenty-three (rak3ah), because the matter is broader in scope than that, praise be to Allaah.” (13)

What is really important, my brothers and sisters, is the command to observe night prayers during Ramadaan, which is encouraged without specifying a particular number. As long as we are praying our Taraaweeh, it shouldn’t be a matter of dispute or disunity whether it is 8 or 20 or even more. And of course, what really counts is that Allaah accepts it from us, even if it is two rak3aat, right?

Praying ONLY on the night of the 27th

Some people pray ONLY on the 27th to seek Lailat ul-Qadr, neglecting all other odd nights, although the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“Seek Laylat ul-Qadr among the odd numbered nights of the last ten nights of Ramadaan.” (14)

Wasting the last part of Ramadhaan preparing for Eid

Some people waste the entire last 10 days of Ramadaan preparing for 3Eed, shopping and frequenting malls, etc. neglecting 3Ibaadah and Laylatul Qadr, although, the Prophet SallAllaahu Alayhi wa Sallam used to strive the hardest during the last ten days of Ramadaan in worship and not in shopping.

3Aa’ishah Radi-Allaahu 3Anha said:

“When the (last) ten nights began, the Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu Alayhi wa Sallam would tighten his waist-wrapper (i.e., strive hard in worship or refrain from intimacy with his wives), stay awake at night and wake his family.” (15)

May Allaah guide us to practice what we learn, spend Ramadaan as is pleasing to Him and may we reap the fruits of Ramadaan and may Allaah accept our Ramadaan. Aameen.

RCTS – Ramadaan Cooking Tips for Sisters

For the sisters who will be cooking this Ramadaan, don’t cook anything extra, in fact meals should be more simple. Simply put, the whole aim of Ramadaan is gaining Taqwa and you can’t do that if you don’t feel the pain of hunger. Don’t waste your precious time standing for hours in the kitchen.

Tips for Time Utilization in relation to food:

1- Search fun, simple and quick recipes now and save them for Ramadaan. It took me a long time to find quick, simple and good recipes but it was time well spent.

2- Try and do meals that depend on putting something in the oven or slow cooker that doesn’t necessarily need you standing there.

3- Limit frying as much as possible. It wastes time and is not healthy anyway.

4- Kids breakfast, lunch and snacks during the day should be healthy but choose no cooking options. Plenty of raw fruit and veggies, healthy smoothies, sandwiches etc.

5- Limit extra sweets, so you don’t cook more and more importantly so we actually feel what poor people go through.

6- Minimize extravagant outings, meals at restaurants etc for the same reason above, save the money towards giving charity.

Ramadaan isn’t about more food , it should be the opposite. We should hardly care about it except to give us energy to continue.

7- Explain your plan to your husband/kids so everyone knows what to expect, ask for their support and to make this Ramadaan about Jannah NOT the kitchen.

8- If your husband is that kind of demanding husbands, do not make him upset, cook the food that he likes and keep dhikr on your tongue. Keep repeating and pondering on the meaning.

9- Minimize having guests over or going to dinner, and if you do, make it One-Dish (everyone makes a dish)  so not one person is left with all the cooking to do.

If you have gatherings, try and get some spiritual benefit out of it even if you just share one hadeeth with them. [You can share this hadeeth (“Did he not reach Ramadaan, fast and pray…?”) or choose (from here)

10- Don’t forget to have an intention while cooking that you are making Iftaar for a fasting person, even if it is your husband and children.

11- Make the quantity little more and prepare a plate for any deserving /poor worker for his Iftar.

12- Listen to a lesson or Qur’aan while cooking. You can review the soorah, that you have memorized, play it on mobile/CD player and keep reciting it with the shaykh. Or simply just make any Dhikr, try not to waste any time.

13- Cook meals now and freeze them if possible. Even if it’s something simple.

[for example you are making a meal with mince, make extra and freeze half. Later on just boil some spaghetti, add red sauce and the frozen mince and you have a meal].

14. You can also do the samoosa/roll filling ready now, prepare the filling, wrap the samoosa/rolls or such, freeze them and in Ramadaan, just take those out and fry.

15- Don’t waste any food, eat leftovers and don’t cook any new meals unless you have finished the previous one.

16- Try not to cook every day and cook for at least 2 days in advance. Remember it’s NOT about the food.

We do not know, if we will be able to see this Ramadaan & live to its fullest. I personally know people who passed away recently and missed out on this opportunity to start over and reconnect with Allaah.

May Allaah let us witness Ramadaan and may we reap the benefits from it, Aameen

Taking Ramadaan as a ritual:

For many of us Ramadaan has lost its spirituality and has become more of a ritual than a form of 3Ibaadah. We fast from morning to night just because everyone around us is fasting too. We forget that it’s a time to purify our hearts and our souls from all evil….we forget to make du3aa’, forget to beseech Allaah to forgive us and ask Him to save us from the Fire of Hell. Sure we stay away from food and drink but that’s about all. Although the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Jibreel said to me, ‘May Allaah rub his nose in the dust, that person to who Ramadaan comes and his sins are not forgiven,’ and I said, ‘Ameen’….” (1)

Fasting but not praying

Realize that the fasting of one who does not pray WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. This is because not praying constitutes kufr as the Prophet Sall-Allaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his giving up prayer.” (2)

In fact, NONE of his good deeds will be accepted; rather, they are all annulled. The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Whoever forsakes ‘Asr prayer, his deeds are in vain.” (3)

This hadeeth indicates that in the case of one who does not pray, Allaah will not accept any deed from him, so the one who does not pray will not benefit at all from his deeds, and no good deeds of his will ascend to Allaah. (4)

Too much stress on food and drink

For some people, the entire month of Ramadaan revolves around food. They spend the ENTIRE day planning, cooking, shopping and thinking about only food, instead of concentrating on Salaah, Qur’aan and other acts of worship. All they can think of is FOOD, so much so that they turn the month of ‘fasting’ into the month of ‘feasting’. Come Iftaar time, their table is a sight to see, with the multitudes and varieties of food, sweets and drinks. They are missing the very purpose of fasting, and thus, increase in their greed and desires instead of learning to control them.

And remember, too much food is also a kind of waste & extravagance.

وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ

“…..and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al-Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance)” [soorah al-A3raaf , v:31]

Spending all day cooking

Some of the sisters (either by their own choice or forced by their husbands) are cooking ALL day and ALL night, so that by the end of the day, they are too tired to even pray 3Ishaa’, let alone pray Taraaweeh or Tahajjud; too exhausted to even read Qur’aan.

This is the month of mercy and forgiveness, du3aa’ and 3Ibaadah, to increase in your taqwa and to improve your relationship with Allaah. And how can you do that if you spend all your time in the kitchen cooking? So turn off that stove and turn on your Eemaan!

Eating too much

Some people stuff themselves at Suhoor until they are ready to burst, because they think this is the way to not feel hungry during the day and some people eat at Iftaar, like there is no tomorrow, trying to ‘make up for the food they missed.’ However, this is completely against the Sunnah. Remember, moderation is the key to everything.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. If you must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for air. (5)

Besides, too much food distracts a person from many deeds of obedience and worship, makes him lazy.

Sufyaan al-Thawri (may Allaah have mercy on his) said: If you want your body to be healthy and to sleep less, then eat less.  

Eating too much also makes the heart heedless. It was said to Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him):

Does a man find any softness and humility in his heart when he is full?

He said, I do not think so.” (6)

Sleeping all day

Some people spend their entire day (or a major part of it) ‘sleeping away their fast’. Is this what is really required of us during this noble month?

These people are also missing the purpose of fasting and just falling prey to laziness and lethargy. All it needs is to exert a little self-control. For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is nothing, but negligence on his part.

The Standing Committee said regarding this: “For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is a kind of negligence on his part, especially since the month of Ramadaan is a special time and the Muslim should strive to benefit from it by reading Qur’aan a great deal, seeking provision and acquiring knowledge.” (7)

Fasting but not giving up evil

Some of us fast but do not give up lying, cursing, fighting, backbiting, etc. and some of us fast but do not give up cheating, stealing, dealing in haraam, buying lotto tickets, selling alcohol, committing fornication, etc. and all kinds of impermissible things without realizing that the purpose of fasting is to not stay away from food and drink; rather the aim behind it is to fear Allaah.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [soorah al-Baqarah 2:183]

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it and ignorant conduct, Allaah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.” (8)

In another narration:

Whoever does not give up obscene talk and lying, Allaah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.” (9)

Ramadhaan highway Code  - Dos And Donts

Wasting time

The month of Ramadaan is a precious, precious time, so much so that Allaah calls this month أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ

“Ayyaamum Ma3doodaat” (A fixed number of days) (10)

Before we know it, this month of mercy and forgiveness will be over. We should try and spend every moment possible in the worship of Allaah so that we can make the most of this blessing. However, there are some of us who waste away their day playing video games, or worse still, watching TV, movies or even listening to music.

Subhaan Allaah! Trying to obey Allaah by DISOBEYING him!

Make the best of this Ramadaan (see here & here). who knows this could be our last Ramadan.

Smoking

Smoking is haraam (forbidden) in Islaam whether during Ramadaan or outside of it (11) as it is one of al-Khabaa’ith (evil things). And this includes ALL kinds of ‘smoking material’ whether it is cigars, cigarettes, pipes,’Sheesha’, hookah or even worse than that. (12)

وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ

“He allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (all good and lawful things), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (all evil and unlawful things) (13)

Smoking is harmful, not only to the one smoking, but also to the ones around him. It is also a means of wasting one’s wealth.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.”

& Smoking invalidates the fast. (14)

Powerful Tips for the Last 10 Nights

1 imagesIn a few days time, we will enter the last 10 days of Ramadaan. It seems as Ramadaan slipped from our hands like sand. Its time to sprint and make the best of these last days.

Time to roll up our sleeves:

1. Do not let your ‘performance’ until now affect your last 10 days. The moment of forgiveness could be today or anytime in the coming days! It is not all lost! If you sincerely wish it could have been better. Chin up and get ready to make it your best yet!

Start with a positive, sincere intention!

2. Today, take a little time to read the Tafseer of Surah al-Qadr to understand what actually happens this night! You will feel its power & greatness so much more!

3. Do not wait for the 27th Night to give it your “all”. The entire last 10 days should be your target. Stay up each night!

Would you want to miss Laylatul Qadr even “by chance”?

4. Do not fall into any innovations/celebrations any Masjid or culture might try to promote. Follow the Sunnah!

The Prophet sall-Allaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam guided us simply: “Whoever stays up and prays on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”

5. Memorize and keep asking the du3aa’ taught by Rasool-Allaah sall-Allaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam:

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ ، تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

“Allaahumma innaka 3Affuwwun tuhibbul 3Afwa fa3fu 3Anni”

“O Allaah, You are forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me”

6. Prepare a short du3aa’ list.

Remember this is as awesome as it ever gets for a servant of Allaah! The Night of Qadr, of Destiny!

Consciously pick each and everything you crucially wish for in this dunya, in your deen, family, and in your aakhirah! Don’t forget to include the brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering and in grief!

7. Take brief naps during the day, if possible. Keep your stomach light and sleep as soon as you have prayed 3Ishaa’. Do not delay!

After a brief nap, refresh yourself and get ready for worship.

8. Don’t neglect your family!

Rasool-Allaah sall-Allaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam made it a point to wake up his wives throughout these nights! And yes, your children are not too young to stay up some part of the night – if they can be allowed to play video games or watch TV, they can be inspired to be up at least for sometime!

Prepare them, make them excited, plan some activities for them to do!

9. Look the Part: The way we dress and prepare has a big effect on our psychology. Wear your best, perfume yourself, and feel the energy!

10. Choose a spot, whether in the Masjid or in your home, where you can have peace and solitude.

Keep your mus-haf, praying mat, and water at hand so that you are not distracted by constantly getting up for this or that.

11. This is not the night to tweet pics or update FaceBook statuses about how amazing the night is and how you are feeling & worshipping Allaah!

Let that be a secret between you & your Rabb!

So switch off those phones, WiFi, laptops and computers. Disconnect with the world, and connect with al-3Afuww!

12. If you find yourself feeling sleepy, vary your acts of worship.

Alternate between Qiyaam, heartfelt du3’aa, reading the Qur’aan. Do not spend the night listening to lectures or recitations. Or do it only for a short while when you feel the sleep coming on!

13. Patience is the Key:

The last 10 days might be tiring. You might still have work or school. This is the time to bear all that hardship, and keep firm Sabr.

Think how Allaah has blessed you with this tremendous opportunity that might never come again in your life again.

If you knew for sure that this was your last Ramadan, if you knew certainly that Jannah was up for grabs, wouldn’t you sprint for it no matter what it takes?

14. This is most important:

Keep husn adh-dhann bi Allaah (good expectations from Allaah).

When you ask, remember you are asking the Most Generous King. If you hope for the best, He will give you the best. Don’t hold back. Trust in Him, pour out your heart in front of Him, and let no doubt, no barrier, no evil thoughts keep you away from Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem!!

Prophet SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

“Ramadhan has arrived to you, a month of barakah (blessings), Allaah envelops you (with His mercy & blessings), so He descends His mercy, erases the sins, answers your du3aas, and He watches your competition in virtuous deeds and He boasts in front of the angels about you. So let Allaah see the best from you for truly, the miserable one is he who is deprived from the mercy of Allaah (in this month).” [Tabaraanee, Saheeh]

He SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam also said:

“When the first night of Ramadhaan comes, the doors of Paradise will be opened and the doors of Hell will be closed, and the devils will be chained, and it will be said: “O you who desires virtue! Come forth and O you who desires evil! Stay behind’, and Allaah has people whom He frees from Hell every night (in that month).” [Bukhaaree & Muslim]

The whole universe is going through a change, Doors of paradise are open & hell are closed. Allaah watches our competition & struggle for various deeds.

To get the maximum benefits & to avoid the distractions during this month (only 29-30 days), here are some tips.

Distraction

Maximize Your TIME: 

=> Limit Your Internet Activities

  • Update your Facebook status or message your friends & contacts that you won’t be using Facebook “so much” during Ramadaan.
  • Share your status (won’t be available), like it & post on the walls of your friends whom you chat or interact mostly.
  • In Ramadaan, check Facebook Once  in a day.
  • Check emails only once or after every 2 days. Do not reply to un-important emails. You can also set an auto-responder message that you will get back after Ramadaan.
  • “NO” to un-necessary Facebook status updates, likes, comments, tags or sharing pics or photos, videos, not even aayaat or Ahadeeeth. Avoid reading the updates from family members, posts or status updates. [we can live without or minimal Facebook for 1 month. A few months or few years before, we didn’t have Facebook].
  • Reduce your Whats-App as much possible, Keep your whats App settings on silent. Leave groups that are not-so-beneficial, or keep the group notifications on silent.
  • This does NOT include chatting or talking to parents, spouses or family. But make it minimal.
  • Tell your friends, contacts that they can SMS you if there is any urgent need, query or advice.
  • Keep all your YouTube To-be-viewed list/videos for a later time, after Ramadaan.
  • NO to Twitter, Telegram, Skype or Viber (atleast for Ramadaan). The Salaf used to stop giving hadeeth classes during Ramadaan.

Important Advice:

  • DO NOT use the morning blessed hour for Net/Facebook/WhatsApp. You can use 5-10 minutes after Dhuhr prayer which is the time,  one is usually a bit lazy & dull. Check important messages/emails. No more than 10 minutes.
  • DO NOT attend the phone, reply to chats/ whatsapp / SMS  at early morning hours, last 3rd of night or while reading Qur’aan. Its is “Your Time”, unless it is from Parents, spouses or urgent call.
  • If your Nafs calls you to have chat with friends or send a message/whats-app, remind it, it is only a matter of 30 days. Your sisters & other friends might win the race. You want to be a Winner in-shaa’-Allaah.
  •  Remember all of our oppressed Muslim brothers + sisters all over the world, especially those in Syria, Burma, Palestine, Egypt, Pakistan etc. Remember du3aa’ made for a brother /sister in their absence, angels say Aameen to it.

 May we come out of this race of Ramadaan as winners. Aameen

What can a woman who is menstruating do on Laylat al-Qadr?

A woman who is menstruating may do all acts of worship apart from praying, fasting, circumambulating the Ka3bah and doing i3tikaaf in the mosque.

It was narrated that the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam used to stay up at night during the last ten nights of Ramadaan. It is narrated that 3Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “When the last ten nights of Ramadaan came, the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would refrain from marital relations, stay up at night and wake his family up.” (1)

Staying up at night is not only for prayer, rather it includes all kinds of acts of worship. This is how the scholars interpreted it. 

Al-Haafiz said: “Staying up at night” means staying up to do acts of worship. 

Al-Nawawi said: spending the night staying up to pray etc. 

He said in 3Awn al-Ma’bood: i.e., in prayer, dhikr and reciting the Qur’aan. 

Praying qiyaam is the best act of worship that a person can do on Laylat al-Qadr. Hence the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever spends the night of Laylat al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (2) 

Because the woman who is menstruating is not allowed to pray, she can spend the night in doing other acts of worship apart from prayer, such as:

1- Reading or reciting Qur’aan.

2- Dhikr – such as saying Subhaan-Allaah, La ilaaha illa-Allaah, al-Hamdu Lillaah, etc. She can repeat the words “Subhaan-Allaah wa’l-hamdu Lillaah, wa laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, wa Allaahu akbar (Glory be to Allaah, praise be to Allaah, there is no god but Allaah and Allaah is Most Great)” and “Subhaan Allaah wa bi hamdihi, subhaan Allaah il-3Azeem (Glory and praise be to Allaah, glory be to Allaah the Almighty)” etc.

3- Istighfaar (praying for forgiveness), by repeating the phrase “Astaghfir-Allaah (I ask Allaah for forgiveness).”

4- Du3aa’ (supplication) – she can pray to Allaah and ask Him for what is good in this world and in the Hereafter, for du3aa’ is one of the best acts of worship. The Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said, “Du3aa’ is 3ibaadah (worship).” (3)

The woman who is menstruating can do these acts of worship and others on Laylat al-Qadr.

Exerting Oneself during the Last Ten Days of Ramadaan

3Aa’ishah radi Allaahu 3Anha aid: “When the last ten days (of Ramadaan) would come, the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would spend his night in worship, wake his family (at night), exert himself and tighten his Izaar (waistcloth).”(1)

This hadeeth is proof that the last ten days of Ramadaan have a special virtue over any other (set of days), in which one should increase in obedience and acts of worship, such as prayer, making dhikr (remembrance) and reciting the Qur’aan.

3Aa’ishah radi Allaahu 3Anha has described our Prophet and role model, Muhammad sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam with four attributes:

1. He sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would “spend his night in worship”, meaning he would not sleep during it. Thus, he sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would remain awake throughout it in worship and he would liven his soul by spending the night in sleeplessness. This is since sleep is the brother of death. The meaning of “spend his night” is that he sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would spend all of it in the state of qiyaam (night prayer) and performing acts of worship that are done for the sake of Allaah, Lord of the worlds. We must remember that the last ten days of Ramadaan are fixed and numbered.

As for what has been reported concerning the forbiddance of spending the entire night in prayer, which has been mentioned in the hadeeth of 3Abdullaah Ibn 3Amr radi Allaahu 3Anhu, then it is in regards to someone who does that consistently throughout every night of the year.

2. He sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would “wake up his family”,  meaning his pure wives, the Mothers of the Believers, so that they may take part in the profiting of good, the dhikr (remembrance) and the acts of worship during these blessed times.

3. He sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would “exert himself”, meaning he sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would persevere and struggle in worship, adding more to his deeds than what he had done in the first twenty days (of Ramadaan). He only did this because the night of Al-Qadr occurs during one of these (last ten) days.

4. He sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would “tighten his Izaar (waist cloth)” meaning he would exert himself and struggle intensely in worship. It is also said that it means he sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would withdraw from women. This seems to be more correct since it inclines with what was mentioned previously and with the hadeeth of Anas radi Allaahu 3Anhu: “He sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would roll up his bed and withdraw from women (i.e. his wives).” (2)

Also, he sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam would observe I3tikaaf in the last ten days of Ramadaan and the person who is in the state of I3tikaaf is restricted from interacting (sexually) with women.

So, O Muslim brother, strive to characterize yourself with these attributes. And guard the prayer you make in the depths of the night (tahajjud) with the Imaam in addition to the Taraaweeh prayer (which is prayed in the early parts of the night), so that your exertion in these last ten days may go beyond that of the first twenty. And so that you may achieve the attribute of “spending the night in worship” by praying.

And you must be patient in your obedience to Allaah, for indeed, the tahajjud (night) prayer is difficult, but its reward is great. By Allaah, it is a great opportunity in ones life and a profitable thing to take advantage of, for the one whom Allaah grants it to. And a person does not know if perhaps he will encounter one of Allaah’s many rewards during the night prayer, thus serving as assistance for him in this world and in the Hereafter.

The righteous predecessors of this ummah would lengthen the prayer at night, exerting themselves. As-Saa’ib Ibn Yazeed said: “3Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab ordered Ubay Bin Ka3ab and Tameem Ad-Daaree to lead the people in prayer with eleven raka’aat. The reciter would recite one hundred verses, to the point that we had to lean upon wooden staffs due to the long standing. And we would not stop until the early parts of Fajr.” [3]

3Abdullaah Ibn Abee Bakr reported: “I heard my father (i.e. Abu Bakr) say: ‘During Ramadaan, we would finish (the night prayer) late and we would hurry the servants to present the food (of suhoor) for fear that Fajr (morning) would come upon us.” [4]

There are two struggles of the soul that the believer faces during Ramadaan: the struggle by day with fasting and the struggle by night with qiyaam (night prayer). So whosoever combines these two and fulfills their rights, then he is amongst the patient — those who will “be given their reward in full without any reckoning.” [5]

These ten days are the last part of the month and a person’s actions are based on his last ones. So perhaps, he will encounter the night of Al-Qadr, while standing in prayer for Allaah and thus have all his past sins forgiven.

And one must incite, animate and persuade his family to perform acts of worship, especially in these great times in which no one neglects it except that he has been deprived. What is more incredible than this is that while the people are performing prayer and making tahajjud, some individuals spend their time in forbidden gatherings and sinful events. This is indeed the greatest loss. We ask Allaah for his protection.

Therefore, embarking on these last days means entering into the profiting from righteous deeds in what remains of the month. From the unfortunate matters is to see that some people excel in righteous actions, such as prayer and recitation of the Qur’aan, in the first part of the month, but then signs of fatigue and weariness begin to show on them afterwards, especially when the last ten days of Ramadaan come in. And this is in spite of these last ten days possessing a greater standing than the first ones. Thus, one must persevere in striving and struggling and increase his worship when the end of the month draws near.

And we must keep in mind that a person’s actions are based on his last ones.

Conditions You Must Meet to Benefit from the Qur’aan

اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابًا مُّتَشَابِهًا مَّثَانِيَ تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُدَى اللَّهِ يَهْدِي بِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍ

“Allaah has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Qur’aan), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allaah. That is the guidance of Allaah. He Guides therewith whom He pleases and whomever Allaah sends astray, for him there is no guide. [Soorah Az-Zumar, v: 23]

Al-Hasan Al-Basree said: “O son of Aadam, how is your heart ever going to be softened by the recitation of Qur’aan when all you read for is to reach the end of the soorah

If you want to benefit from the Qur’aan;

1.You must concentrate and devote your heart solely when reciting and listening to it.

2.You must pay attention, and try to comprehend the fact that what you are reading is the word of Allaah.

3.  As you read you must know that Allaah is addressing you in and through His Qur’aan. Indeed it is the words of Allaah to you through the tongue of His Messenger sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam.

Allaah says:

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى السَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ

which means: “Verily, therein is a reminder for him who has a heart and gives ear while he is heedful.” [soorah Qaaf, v:37]

Obtaining the perfect effect depends upon the stimulus, the place of the receiver , the condition for the effect to occur, and the absence of any obstacle that may obstruct the effect. The above verse explains all that in the most precise and clear words.

Allaah says, which means: “Verily, therein is a reminder” it is a sign for what has passed from the beginning of the chapter until this verse.

His saying, “for him who has a heart” refers to the place of the receiver and it means the living heart, which comprehends what Allaah says.

For example when Allaah says:

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ وَقُرْآنٌ مُّبِينٌ ﴿٦٩﴾ لِّيُنذِرَ مَن كَانَ حَيًّا

which means: “This is only a Reminder and a Plain Qur’aan . That he or it (Muhammed salallaahu alayhi wasalam or the Qur’aan) may give warning to him who is living ( a healthy minded believer.)”[soorah Yaa-seen, v:69-70]

“who is living” means the one who has a living heart.

And when Allaah says, which means,“and gives ear” means the person listens to what is being said to him.

And this is the condition to be truly affected by the words.

And His saying “while he is heedful” means to be aware; that his heart is conscious and not distracted by any worldly matter.

Ibn Qutaibah said, “He is listening to the Book of Allaah while his heart is present and understands; not being inattentive or unaware. If the heart is inattentive; lacking understanding concerning what is being said, as well as failing to see or meditate on it, then there is an obstruction. If however, the Qur’aan produced an effect on the receiver, which is the living heart and the condition of listening was fulfilled, and the heart is not engaged with something other than the meaning of the speech, the desired effect will occur, which is obtaining benefit from the Qur’aan and remembrance.”

If one was to embark on a business project, they would study the project, plan it, define its goals, have an agenda, know exactly what they want to accomplish with this project. This is a fundamental principle.

Shouldn’t the people of deen (us) who want Allaah’s pleasure, be the first to use this principle, when our goal is Jannah/paradise!!

Before the arrival of Ramadaan, we need to define/set up our goals & define the ways to fulfill/reach them.

1st Goal

Our hearts should truly yearn for Allaah’s Rahmah:

Every day & night of Ramadhaan, Allaah’s Rahmah (mercy) descends upon some people & we should sincerely yearn/desire for it from the bottom of heart. 

It can change your life forever in a way you can never imagine. We must understand that we are in dire need of Allaah’s Rahmah. We won’t get in Jannah without His Mercy. There is no survival without Allaah’s Rahmah..

2nd Goal

Consciously intending & desiring Allaah’s Forgiveness for all our sins:

Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever fasts Ramadhan with Eemaan and Ihtisaab (seeking Allaah’s reward), will be forgiven all his previous sins.” (1)

We should be fasting with Eemaan (faith) in submission to Allaah because He ordered us to do so & we should have Ihtisaab (consciously taking account of our selves) hoping for Allaah’s reward.

Remember that we should be doing the actions for Allaah. We shouldn’t be doing acts routinely like robots just for the sake of it. Fasting is not just about refraining food/ drinks and things that He made Haraam during the day but you must be conscious because this is indeed Allaah’s order. We want to feel this feeling: “I am doing this because You ordered us. You are my Master and I am Your slave. I will follow your order. and i will consciously wait and yearn for Allaah’s reward. This is ihtisaab.

3rd Goal

Desiring Protection & Freedom from the Hellfire:

Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will place between him & the fire a ditch as (large as) the distance between the heavens and earth.” (2)

Every night in Ramadaan Allaah sets people free from the Hell-fire. 

Think/imagine if you are from people of fire !!!

We have 29–30 nights in Ramadaan to be freed from the Hellfire. We can’t afford to be lazy. Throughout the Ramadaan, every night, beg & make du3aa’ to Allaah to free you from the fire.

4th Goal

Allaah to boast to His Angels about us :

Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Ramadaan has arrived to you a month of Barakah, Allaah envelops you (with His mercy & blessings). so He descends His mercy, erases the sins, answers the du3aa’ and watches in (this month) your competition/race for goodness and He boasts to His angels about you. So let Allaah see the best from you, for truly the miserable one is the one who is prevented Allaah’s mercy.” (3)

Allaah will boast to the honourable angels who just worship Allaah all the time and never tire or feel lazy in their worship of Him, about people by name.

5th Goal

Intercession:

Fasting will intercede for us on the Day of Judgement. Imagine you are standing on the day of Judgment, & you see all your sins, a lifetime of sins in-front of you, you will feel doomed, then fasting will come to intercede for you. 

Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa salaam said: “Fasting and the Qur’aan will both intercede for the slave on the day of Resurrection. Fasting will say, “O Lord! I prevented him from his food and desires throughout the day, so accept my intercession for him. And the Qur’aan will say, ” I prevented him from sleep at night, so accept my intercession for him. So their intercession will be accepted.” (4)

6th Goal

Removal of the heart’s diseases:

Our hearts have many illnesses. Many we know and many we dont know. We want to remove the love for this world from our hearts. We want to elevate ourselves beyond the material/lowly fulfillment of dunya.

Ibn Qayyim said: “Fasting is a protection against the diseases of the heart, body & mind.”

7th Goal

Establishment of Allaah’s laws on Ourselves (our nafs):

Most of us live in heedlessness except for a few. We follow our nafs (self) which drives us, fulfilling her desires and whims. One has to be controlled by Allaah’s law.

In Ramadaan we are consciously making our nafs feel that Allaah is the One who has authority on us. The nafs is put in its place and made humble. Nafs (self) is like a spoilt child that needs to be controlled. Do not feel sorry for the nafs. Do not give in to the nafs’ whims and desires.

Train and teach your nafs to obey Allaah’s commandment to a greatest degree and don’t allow her to control you.

8th Goal

Establishment of complete manners:

Ramadaan is a training school to train ourselves in manners.  Manners are not according to customs or personalities.  Don’t make excuses for yourself that this is my personality, this is just how I am.

In Ramadaan, intend that this is the time to train yourself.  Think how I shall elevate myself. Imagine the person you would like to be.

Control your behavior & reactions when someone argues with you, Remember you are in state of 3Ibaadah. Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa salaam said, “Fasting is a shield. So if it is a day where one of you is fasting, then he should not fulfill his desires, nor sin, nor yell, nor behave ignorantly. And if anyone insults him or fights with him, he should say, ‘I am fasting.’” (5)

9th Goal

Training ourselves to be consistent:

Be consistent in good deeds even if they are little. One of the biggest calamity is stopping our deeds. Ramadaan is an opportunity to train ourselves, our nafs to be consistent to do 3Ibaadah/ acts of worships.

Be consistent and increase your 3Ibaadah during the last 10 days. Remember actions are judged according to their endings.  Strive for istiqaamah (steadfastness). Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa salaam said: “The most beloved deed to Allaah is the most regular and constant even though it were little.” (6)

Welcoming Ramadaan


This is an advice that we need because we have a noble, honourable guest coming. Our grand guest is the blessed month of Ramadaan. We need to magnify the symbol of Allaah.

Jabir Ibn 3Abdillaah was reported to have said: “Do not allow the days that you eat be the same as your fasting days, do not make them equal.”

In order to make our Ramadaan different, as it was meant to be, we have to set the stage to welcome Ramadaan. We must have moments of truce/tranquility, we need moments of truce/time off, a break. We need a BREAK from the following:

1. We need to take a break from all sins:

We must be super cautious to cut off sinning in Ramadaan. In Ramadaan, all causes of sin are weaken – the devils are chained, most Muslims around us are involved in good deeds. Masaajid  are full, more people read Qur’aan.

Also your fasting weakens the effect of shaytaan/Qareen flowing in your blood.

2) A Break from Unnecessary discussions & Arguments at home:

If any discussion comes up, decide if you can talk about it after Ramadaan. Try to find a solution to family problems & put it at rest. Don’t allow the problem to stop your Eemaan from growing in Ramadaan.

Set up the atmosphere of love & closeness in Ramadaan, to make it easy for us & people around us to focus on Ramadaan. Have a meeting with your family members to talk about Ramadaan & discuss the principles/plan to be followed in Ramadaan.

(e.g., no TV atleast for Ramadaan, not even for news, no music in car/house, no staying up late at night except for 3Ibaadah, no computer/video games).

3) A Break from too much Food:

Ramadaan is not a month of eating. Be simple when it comes to food. Eating too much makes a person lazy & sleepy. Take a break from too much cooking. Try to cook something simple during Ramadaan. Pre-cook some food & freeze it before Ramadaan. Find out some short cut & tips to prepare the food quickly.

4) A Break from Talking:

Minimize your chat on the telephone. Don’t linger in masaajid to chat. Avoid long conversations as it tend to slip into talking something inappropriate. Use the phone minimally.

Know that every word that comes out of our mouth is either a reward for us or a punishment for us. The prophet sallalaahu 3alayhi wassalam said:”Whoever remains silent is saved.”

Allaah has created one tongue & two ears for a reason: talk less, listen more!

5) A Break from your Beds:

Sleep is a na3mah from Allaah, but Ramadaan is not the time for sleeping. Let your bed rest for a month. Don’t sleep more than 4-5 hours at night (advice of the shaykh). Have qayloolah/nap between Dhur & 3Asr time, as naturally person feels sleepy/lazy during this time.

One of the salaf once stopped by a friend’s house late at night in Ramadaan. He found his friend sleeping. His friend asked him: “what are you doing here at this time of the night?” The Salaf said: “What are you doing sleeping at this time of the night in Ramadaan!”

Have a sincere friend who has a high level of motivation & determination who can help, remind, share & compete with you in good deeds.

6) A Break from People:

If you mix with people, let it be short with those who are strong on ibaadah. They can bring you closer to Allaah. Iftaar parties in ramadaan are getting very common. We have the rest of the full year to do parties & to socialize. Indeed it’s a great reward to break someone’s fast but give food to people who are needy & poor.

7) Peace with Friends/co-workers & Maintaining Family Ties:

Don’t enter Ramadaan with hatred for anybody or allow anyone to have negative feelings on you. Clear/clean yourself from any hatred & negative thoughts. Forgive others & forget.

Bring love & happiness to people close to you (e.g., give gifts, make them happy with you). You should feel nobody hate you, nobody has problems with you. If they still have animosity with you, then leave/ignore it.

We are trying our best to rectify the situation before Ramadaan to devote our heart & mind to Allaah in Ramadaan.

8 ) A Break from Running Around & Long Hours outside the House:

Get all your shopping done before Ramadaan. Make a list of the things/grocery/ items, that is enough for one month & buy it all together, so in Ramadaan you just go out quickly to buy fresh things or get a home delivery to minimize shopping time.

Get your 3Eid things/shopping done before Ramadaan.

9) Give your Mind & Heart a Break from Worldly Things:

Schools are starting, buy things in advance, don’t worry about so & so problems, don’t worry about 3Eid. The big thing is Ramadaan, because we celebrate 3Eid for what we have done/accomplished in Ramadaan.

Give your mind & heart break from thinking about worldly/duniya things.

  • Preoccupy your mind in 3Ibaadah & focus on the Hereafter.
  • Think of new deed you want to do today
  • Think how to have more khushoo.
  • Think of ways you can help & serve other Muslims in Ramadaan.

10) Take a Break from Withholding:

Give lots of charity/Sadaqah in Ramadaan. The prophet sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa ssallam used to be super generous in Ramadaan.

Give, Give and GIVE.

Give in secret as much as possible.
