Skipping Suhoor

Some of us are too lazy or sleepy to eat Suhoor or just don’t think it’s important. Even if you don’t feel like having a lot of food, just eat something little; a few dates, even a glass of water. That’s because the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Eat suhoor for in suhoor there is blessing” (1)

It was narrated from Jaabir that the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Whoever wants to fast, let him eat something for suhoor.” (2)

Stopping Suhoor at ‘Imsaak’

Some people stop eating Suhoor 10-15 minutes earlier than the time of Fajr to observe ‘Imsaak’. They think they cannot eat beyond that time and that it would be wrong if they did.

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen was asked about some timetables which give the time of imsaak as being approximately one-quarter of an hour before Fajr. He said:

This is a kind of bid3ah (innovation) which has no basis in the Sunnah. Rather the Sunnah is to do the opposite. Allaah allows us to eat until dawn: “and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)” [al-Baqarah 2:187]

And the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “….eat and drink until you hear the adhaan of Ibn Umm Maktoom, for he does not give the adhaan until dawn comes.”

This ‘imsaak’ which some of the people practice, is an addition to what Allaah has prescribed, so it is false. It is a kind of extremism in religion, and the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:
“Those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed.” (3)

Not fasting if they missed Suhoor

Sometimes, our alarm doesn’t go off on time and we miss the time for eating, just barely waking up with the adhaan. I’m sure this has happened to all of us one time or another. In this situation, there are some people who are too scared to fast if they miss Suhoor. They think they will feel too weak during the day or that, by default, missing Suhoor automatically means NO fast that day.

But, if you think about it, unless a person has a genuine health problem, it is not such a big deal after all. What if you missed a few morsels of food? You’ll be fine in-shaa’-Allaah. Alhamdulillaah most of us have enough fat stored in our bodies to keep us going for several days without food!

Remember, obedience to Allaah takes precedence over everything. 

Shaykh Salih Al-Munajjid said: “If a Muslim does not eat suhoor or does not wake up for Fajr, this is not counted as a reason for him not to fast.” (4)

Saying the intention to fast ‘out loud’ or saying a specific dua to start fasting

The intention is an action of the heart. We should resolve in our heart that we are going to fast tomorrow. That is all we need. It is not prescribed by the Shari’ah for us to say out loud, “I intend to fast”, “I will fast tomorrow” or other phrases that have been innovated by some people.

Also, there is no specific du3aa’ to be recited at the time of starting the fast in the correct Sunnah. Whatever du3aa’  you may see on some papers or Ramadaan calendars, etc. is not from sunnah.

Delaying breaking fast

Some people wait until the adhaan finishes or even several minutes after that, just to be ‘on the safe side’. However, the Sunnah is to hasten to break the fast, which means breaking fast whenever the adhaan starts, right after the sun has set. Aa3ishah radi Allaahu 3Anha said: This is what the Messenger of AllaahSallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam used to do.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“The people will continue to do well so long as they hasten to break the fast.” (5)

Al-Nawawi said: 

This hadeeth urges us to hasten to break the fast as soon as it is established that the sun has set. What this means is that the ummah will continue to be in a sound state and they will be fine so long as they continue to adhere to this Sunnah. (6)

Eating continuously until the time for Maghrib is up

Some people put so much food in their plates when breaking their fast and continue eating, enjoying dessert, drinking tea, etc., until they miss Maghrib. That is obviously not right.

What one should do is to hasten to break the fast by eating small morsels that will calm one’s hunger, then get up to pray, then if one wishes, one may come back and eat more.

 This is what the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam used to do. (7)

Missing the golden chance of having your Du3aa’ accepted

The prayer of the fasting person is guaranteed to be accepted at the time of breaking fast. The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

 “There are three whose du3aa’ will not be rejected, …………..the fasting person when he breaks his fast…” (8)

Instead of sitting down and making Du3aa’ at this precious time, some people forego this beautiful chance, and are too busy frying ‘samosas’, talking, setting the food, filling their plates and pouring drinks into their glasses and they lose this golden opportunity.

Think about it…. Is food more important than the chance to have your sins forgiven or the fulfillment of your Du3aa’?

Not fasting because of exams or work

Exams or work is NOT one of the excuses allowed by the Shari3ah to not fast. You can do your studying and revision at night if it is too hard to do that during the day.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked about that and he replied: 

It is not permissible for an adult of sound mind to break the fast during Ramadaan because of exams, because that is not one of the excuses permitted in Islam. Rather he has to fast and do his studying at night if it is hard for him to do it during the day. Those who are in charge of exams should be kind to the students and arrange the exams at a time other than Ramadaan, so as to serve two purposes: the purpose of fasting and that of giving students time to prepare for the exams.

The Standing Committee said: 

It is not permissible to break the fast for the reason you mentioned, rather that is haraam, because it is not included among the excuses for which it is permissible to break the Ramadaan fast. (9)

Also remember that pleasing and obeying Allaah is much more important than ‘good grades’. Besides, if you will fulfil your obligation to fast, even if you have to study, Allaah will make it easy for you and help you in everything you do.

“Whosoever fears Allaah, He will appoint for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect, Allaah is Sufficient for whosoever puts his trust in Him.” (Soorah at-Talaaq, v: 2-3)

Fasting and not wearing Hijaab

Women’s observing hijab in front of non-mahram men and covering their faces is something that is obligatory as is indicated by the Book of our Lord and the Sunnah of our Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam. (10) The correct view is that a woman is obliged to cover her entire body, even the face and hands. (11)

If a woman does not wear hijab, then she is disobeying her Lord thereby, but her fast is still valid, because sins, including not wearing hijab, do not invalidate the fast, but they detract from its reward (12)

Lavish Iftaar parties

Although inviting each other for breaking fast is something good and encouraged, some people go to extremes with lavish ‘Iftaar parties’ with all sorts of disobedience to Allaah, from flirting, mixing of the sexes and hijaab-less women, to show-off and extravagance, to heedlessness to Salaah and Taraaweeh, to even music and dancing.

Mixing fasting and dieting

DO NOT make the mistake of fasting with the intention to diet. That is one of the biggest mistakes some of us make, especially the sisters.

Fasting is an act of worship and should only and only, be for the sake of Allah alone. Otherwise, mixing it with the intention of dieting may become a form of (minor) Shirk. Sure, there are always added benefits of obeying Allaah, one of them being, losing weight while fasting. That comes in automatically, so reap the benefits but don’t make it part of your intention. If the side benefits come, they come. If they don’t, that shouldn’t stop you from obeying Allaah and fulfilling your duty.

Fighting over the number of Raka3ah of Taraweeh

There is no specific number of rak’ahs for Taraweeh prayer, rather it is permissible to do a little or a lot. Both 8 and 20 are okay.

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen said:

“No one should be denounced for praying eleven or twenty-three (rak3ah), because the matter is broader in scope than that, praise be to Allaah.” (13)

What is really important, my brothers and sisters, is the command to observe night prayers during Ramadaan, which is encouraged without specifying a particular number. As long as we are praying our Taraaweeh, it shouldn’t be a matter of dispute or disunity whether it is 8 or 20 or even more. And of course, what really counts is that Allaah accepts it from us, even if it is two rak3aat, right?

Praying ONLY on the night of the 27th

Some people pray ONLY on the 27th to seek Lailat ul-Qadr, neglecting all other odd nights, although the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“Seek Laylat ul-Qadr among the odd numbered nights of the last ten nights of Ramadaan.” (14)

Wasting the last part of Ramadhaan preparing for Eid

Some people waste the entire last 10 days of Ramadaan preparing for 3Eed, shopping and frequenting malls, etc. neglecting 3Ibaadah and Laylatul Qadr, although, the Prophet SallAllaahu Alayhi wa Sallam used to strive the hardest during the last ten days of Ramadaan in worship and not in shopping.

3Aa’ishah Radi-Allaahu 3Anha said:

“When the (last) ten nights began, the Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu Alayhi wa Sallam would tighten his waist-wrapper (i.e., strive hard in worship or refrain from intimacy with his wives), stay awake at night and wake his family.” (15)

May Allaah guide us to practice what we learn, spend Ramadaan as is pleasing to Him and may we reap the fruits of Ramadaan and may Allaah accept our Ramadaan. Aameen.

Dhul Hijjah Checklist

Bismillaah

The month of Dhul-Hijjah is just round the corner. The first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best days of the year. Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said about these days:

There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days.”

The people asked, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?” He said, 

“Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.”

bismillaah1Beautiful authentic du3aa’s from Qur’aan & sunnah that Brother Navaid 3Aziz, posted on his facebook page (1) last Ramadaan. This du3aa’ list will be beneficial for everyone in-shaa’-Allaah.

Here is the message & full post by Brother Navaid, with slight modification & references. I have also added a pdf version of the du3aa’.

Brother Navaid 3Aziz wrote,

Assalaamu 3Alaykum everyone, I looked at the greatest needs we have in this day and age and selected 7 du3aa’s from the Qur’aan and Sunnah that I feel would be in the best interests of every Muslim.

It would be ideal to print this list (or have it on your phone) and keep it handy at the time of Iftaar. Likewise, please add to your list anything else that you would like, especially that which your heart desires.

For your convenience I have included the Arabic, English transliteration, and English translation.

I pray Allah accepts from us all, and makes us from those who are forgiven and pardoned this Ramadaan and entered into Al-Firdaws in the hereafter. Aameen.

Du3aa’:

1-

(2) اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّي أَعْوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَـمِّ وَ الْحُـزْنِ، والعًجْـزِ والكَسَلِ والبُخْـلِ والجُـبْنِ، وضَلْـعِ الـدَّيْنِ وغَلَبَـةِ الرِّجال

Allaahumma inni a3udhubika min al-hammi wal huzani,wal 3ajzi wal kasali, wal bukhli wal jubni, wa dala’ad-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal.

“O Allaah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men”

2-

(3) رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rubbanaa aatina fid-dunya hassana,wa fil aakhirati hassana, waqina 3adhaaban-naar

“Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire”

3-

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ
(4) رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ

Rubbi j’alnee muqeem as-salati wa mindhuriyyati. Rubbana, wa taqabbal du3aa’. Rubbana ighfir lee wa liwaalidayya wa lilmu’mineena yawma yaqoom ul-hisaab

“My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication. Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established”

4- 

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلي وَمَالِي اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي وَمِنْ فَوْقِي وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي (5)   ااااااا  

 

Allaahumma inni as-alukaal-3afiyata fid dunya wal aakhira. Allaahumma inni as-aluka al 3afwa wal 3aafiyata fee deeni wa dunyaya wa ahlee wa malee. Allaahumma ustur 3awrati wa amin row3atee. Allaahumma ahfadhnee min bayni yadayya min khalfi wa 3an yameeni wa 3an shimali wa min fowqi wa a3oodhu bi3adhmatika an aghtaala min tahtee.

“O Allaah, I ask You forwell-being in this life and the next. O Allaah,I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allaah, veil my weaknesses and set at ease my dismay. O Allaah, preserve me from the front and from behind and on my right and on my left and from above, and I take refuge with You lest I be swallowed up by the earth.”

5-

(6) اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

Allaahuma inni as-aluka 3ilman nafi3an wa rizqan tayyiban wa 3amalan matqaballa

“O Allaah, I ask You for knowledge which is beneficial and sustenance which is good, and deeds which are acceptable. [to be said after giving salam for the fajr prayer]”

6-

  (7) اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

Allaahuma a3inni 3ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 3ibaadatik

“O Allaah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best of manners.”

7-

  (8) اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ

Allaahuma inni as-aluka al-jannata wa a3udhubika min an-naar.

“O Allaah, I ask You to grant me Paradise and I take refuge in You from the Fire.”

RCTS – Ramadaan Cooking Tips for Sisters

For the sisters who will be cooking this Ramadaan, don’t cook anything extra, in fact meals should be more simple. Simply put, the whole aim of Ramadaan is gaining Taqwa and you can’t do that if you don’t feel the pain of hunger. Don’t waste your precious time standing for hours in the kitchen.

Tips for Time Utilization in relation to food:

1- Search fun, simple and quick recipes now and save them for Ramadaan. It took me a long time to find quick, simple and good recipes but it was time well spent.

2- Try and do meals that depend on putting something in the oven or slow cooker that doesn’t necessarily need you standing there.

3- Limit frying as much as possible. It wastes time and is not healthy anyway.

4- Kids breakfast, lunch and snacks during the day should be healthy but choose no cooking options. Plenty of raw fruit and veggies, healthy smoothies, sandwiches etc.

5- Limit extra sweets, so you don’t cook more and more importantly so we actually feel what poor people go through.

6- Minimize extravagant outings, meals at restaurants etc for the same reason above, save the money towards giving charity.

Ramadaan isn’t about more food , it should be the opposite. We should hardly care about it except to give us energy to continue.

7- Explain your plan to your husband/kids so everyone knows what to expect, ask for their support and to make this Ramadaan about Jannah NOT the kitchen.

8- If your husband is that kind of demanding husbands, do not make him upset, cook the food that he likes and keep dhikr on your tongue. Keep repeating and pondering on the meaning.

9- Minimize having guests over or going to dinner, and if you do, make it One-Dish (everyone makes a dish)  so not one person is left with all the cooking to do.

If you have gatherings, try and get some spiritual benefit out of it even if you just share one hadeeth with them. [You can share this hadeeth (“Did he not reach Ramadaan, fast and pray…?”) or choose (from here)

10- Don’t forget to have an intention while cooking that you are making Iftaar for a fasting person, even if it is your husband and children.

11- Make the quantity little more and prepare a plate for any deserving /poor worker for his Iftar.

12- Listen to a lesson or Qur’aan while cooking. You can review the soorah, that you have memorized, play it on mobile/CD player and keep reciting it with the shaykh. Or simply just make any Dhikr, try not to waste any time.

13- Cook meals now and freeze them if possible. Even if it’s something simple.

[for example you are making a meal with mince, make extra and freeze half. Later on just boil some spaghetti, add red sauce and the frozen mince and you have a meal].

14. You can also do the samoosa/roll filling ready now, prepare the filling, wrap the samoosa/rolls or such, freeze them and in Ramadaan, just take those out and fry.

15- Don’t waste any food, eat leftovers and don’t cook any new meals unless you have finished the previous one.

16- Try not to cook every day and cook for at least 2 days in advance. Remember it’s NOT about the food.

We do not know, if we will be able to see this Ramadaan & live to its fullest. I personally know people who passed away recently and missed out on this opportunity to start over and reconnect with Allaah.

May Allaah let us witness Ramadaan and may we reap the benefits from it, Aameen

Taking Ramadaan as a ritual:

For many of us Ramadaan has lost its spirituality and has become more of a ritual than a form of 3Ibaadah. We fast from morning to night just because everyone around us is fasting too. We forget that it’s a time to purify our hearts and our souls from all evil….we forget to make du3aa’, forget to beseech Allaah to forgive us and ask Him to save us from the Fire of Hell. Sure we stay away from food and drink but that’s about all. Although the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Jibreel said to me, ‘May Allaah rub his nose in the dust, that person to who Ramadaan comes and his sins are not forgiven,’ and I said, ‘Ameen’….” (1)

Fasting but not praying

Realize that the fasting of one who does not pray WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. This is because not praying constitutes kufr as the Prophet Sall-Allaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his giving up prayer.” (2)

In fact, NONE of his good deeds will be accepted; rather, they are all annulled. The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Whoever forsakes ‘Asr prayer, his deeds are in vain.” (3)

This hadeeth indicates that in the case of one who does not pray, Allaah will not accept any deed from him, so the one who does not pray will not benefit at all from his deeds, and no good deeds of his will ascend to Allaah. (4)

Too much stress on food and drink

For some people, the entire month of Ramadaan revolves around food. They spend the ENTIRE day planning, cooking, shopping and thinking about only food, instead of concentrating on Salaah, Qur’aan and other acts of worship. All they can think of is FOOD, so much so that they turn the month of ‘fasting’ into the month of ‘feasting’. Come Iftaar time, their table is a sight to see, with the multitudes and varieties of food, sweets and drinks. They are missing the very purpose of fasting, and thus, increase in their greed and desires instead of learning to control them.

And remember, too much food is also a kind of waste & extravagance.

وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ

“…..and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al-Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance)” [soorah al-A3raaf , v:31]

Spending all day cooking

Some of the sisters (either by their own choice or forced by their husbands) are cooking ALL day and ALL night, so that by the end of the day, they are too tired to even pray 3Ishaa’, let alone pray Taraaweeh or Tahajjud; too exhausted to even read Qur’aan.

This is the month of mercy and forgiveness, du3aa’ and 3Ibaadah, to increase in your taqwa and to improve your relationship with Allaah. And how can you do that if you spend all your time in the kitchen cooking? So turn off that stove and turn on your Eemaan!

Eating too much

Some people stuff themselves at Suhoor until they are ready to burst, because they think this is the way to not feel hungry during the day and some people eat at Iftaar, like there is no tomorrow, trying to ‘make up for the food they missed.’ However, this is completely against the Sunnah. Remember, moderation is the key to everything.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. If you must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for air. (5)

Besides, too much food distracts a person from many deeds of obedience and worship, makes him lazy.

Sufyaan al-Thawri (may Allaah have mercy on his) said: If you want your body to be healthy and to sleep less, then eat less.  

Eating too much also makes the heart heedless. It was said to Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him):

Does a man find any softness and humility in his heart when he is full?

He said, I do not think so.” (6)

Sleeping all day

Some people spend their entire day (or a major part of it) ‘sleeping away their fast’. Is this what is really required of us during this noble month?

These people are also missing the purpose of fasting and just falling prey to laziness and lethargy. All it needs is to exert a little self-control. For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is nothing, but negligence on his part.

The Standing Committee said regarding this: “For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is a kind of negligence on his part, especially since the month of Ramadaan is a special time and the Muslim should strive to benefit from it by reading Qur’aan a great deal, seeking provision and acquiring knowledge.” (7)

Fasting but not giving up evil

Some of us fast but do not give up lying, cursing, fighting, backbiting, etc. and some of us fast but do not give up cheating, stealing, dealing in haraam, buying lotto tickets, selling alcohol, committing fornication, etc. and all kinds of impermissible things without realizing that the purpose of fasting is to not stay away from food and drink; rather the aim behind it is to fear Allaah.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [soorah al-Baqarah 2:183]

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it and ignorant conduct, Allaah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.” (8)

In another narration:

Whoever does not give up obscene talk and lying, Allaah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.” (9)

Wasting time

The month of Ramadaan is a precious, precious time, so much so that Allaah calls this month أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ

“Ayyaamum Ma3doodaat” (A fixed number of days) (10)

Before we know it, this month of mercy and forgiveness will be over. We should try and spend every moment possible in the worship of Allaah so that we can make the most of this blessing. However, there are some of us who waste away their day playing video games, or worse still, watching TV, movies or even listening to music.

Subhaan Allaah! Trying to obey Allaah by DISOBEYING him!

Make the best of this Ramadaan (see here & here). who knows this could be our last Ramadan.

Smoking

Smoking is haraam (forbidden) in Islaam whether during Ramadaan or outside of it (11) as it is one of al-Khabaa’ith (evil things). And this includes ALL kinds of ‘smoking material’ whether it is cigars, cigarettes, pipes,’Sheesha’, hookah or even worse than that. (12)

وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ

“He allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (all good and lawful things), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (all evil and unlawful things) (13)

Smoking is harmful, not only to the one smoking, but also to the ones around him. It is also a means of wasting one’s wealth.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.”

& Smoking invalidates the fast. (14)

Taqwa – Fear of Allaah

The Month of Safar & the Innovations & Superstitions

Bismillah-Salaam1Allaah says

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ذَلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ أَنْفُسَكُمْ 

(interpretation of the meaning):

Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…” (1)

The month of Safar is one of the twelve Hijri months, and it is the month which comes after Muharram.

326_bIts Name- Safar (صفر )

Some of the (scholars) said that it is so named because of the emptying (isfaar) of Makkah (i.e., its people would all leave) when they travelled during this month.

It was also said that this month is named Safar because they used to raid other tribes at this time, and they would leave those whom they encountered bereft of their possessions (sifran min al-mataa’) – i.e., they would take all their belongings away and they would leave them with nothing. (2)

Incorrect beliefs & Superstitions concerning the month of Safar

These were well known among the people of the Jaahiliyyah, and still exist among some of those who claim to be Muslims. 

  • 4 Rak3aat naafil prayer, prayed on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar, with specific soorah & no. of times soorah are read in it.
  • People do not conclude marriage contracts during Safar
  • Many people believe that it is not permissible to break a stick, knot ropes, or entwine fingers when concluding a marriage contract for this leads to failure of the concerned marriage and disharmony between the spouses
  • Some believe that no one should marry or be circumcised in the month of Safar.
  • Every year, 320,000 calamities come down, and all of that comes down on the last Wednesday of Safar.
  • Or there a special du3aa for Safar or ‘travelling or marriage in Safar is haraam (forbidden)

Ahadeeth  of the Prophet About Safar & Superstition:

It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah radi Allaahu 3Anhu that the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

لا عَدْوَى وَلا طِيَرَةَ وَلا هَامَةَ وَلا صَفَرَ

There is no 3adwaa, no tiyarah, no haamah and no Safar  (3)

(3adwaa (contagion, transmission of infectious disease without the permission of Allaah). Tiyarah (superstitious belief in bird omens). Haamah (refers to a Jaahili Arab tradition described variously as: a worm which infests the grave of a murder victim until he is avenged; an owl; or the bones of a dead person turned into a bird that could fly). Safar (the month of Safar was regarded as “unlucky” during the Jaahiliyyah) (4)

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:  

The words “no Safar” refers to the month of Safar, which the Arabs used to regard as inauspicious, especially for marriage. And it was said that it was a stomach disease that affected camels and was transmitted from one camel to another.

It is more likely that what is meant by Safar here is the month, and that what is meant by saying “no Safar” is that it is not to be regarded as inauspicious, rather it is like any other time, during which good or bad things may be decreed.

This does not mean that these things do not happen, because they do happen. Rather it is a statement that they do not have any effect. The One Who causes things to happen is Allaah. If any of these things has a known effect then that is valid and real; if any of them is imagined to have an effect, then that is invalid and false. Thus the hadeeth demonstrates that if there is a valid effect, it cannot be attributed to that thing itself (rather the One Who causes it to happen is Allaah). If the effect is merely imagined, then this hadeeth is stating that it has no effect in the first place. (5)

safarProphet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

 قال : ” لا هامة ولا صفر “ ، زاد مسلم وغيره  ولا نَوء ولا غُول 

“No haamah and no Safar.” (6). In narration of Muslim and others add the words: “No naw’ and no ghoul.” 

It was said that they used to have superstitions concerning the month of Safar, so the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “No Safar”.

And it was said that the Arabs used to believe that there was a snake in the stomach which would harm a person when he had intercourse, and that this was contagious, so the Lawgiver denied that. Maalik said: “The people of the Jaahiliyyah would regard Safar as not being sacred one year and as sacred the next year. (7)

Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

لاَ عَدْوَى وَلاَ صَفَرَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ كُلَّ نَفْسٍ وَكَتَبَ حَيَاتَهَا وَرِزْقَهَا وَمَصَائِبَهَا

There is no 3Adwa nor safar. Allaah created every soul, so he wrote its life, its provision, and its afflictions”. (8)

Fatawaa About Different Superstitions & Innovations in Safar:

Shaykh Bin Baaz said regarding doing Marriage contracts & or entwining fingers etc during Safar:

Safar, just like all other months, does not bring good or evil, as good is only from Allah subhaanAllaah and evil is predestined by Him. Moreover, it is authentically reported that the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam annulled the concept of pessimism when he said: “There is no 3Adwa, nor is there any Tiyarah, nor is there any Hamah, nor is there Safar”

The same applies to pessimism about entwining fingers, breaking a stick, etc., when concluding a marriage contract. Such beliefs are false, baseless, and thus they should not be adopted by a Muslim. (9)

The Permanent Committee was asked about marrying or be circumcision in the month of Safar. They replied:

What is mentioned with regard to the prohibition of marriage or circumcision during the month of Safar is superstition. Being superstitious of months, days, birds and similar animals is not permissible.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is no 3Adwa, nor is there any Tiyarah (evil omen), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there Safar (the month of Safar was believed to bring bad luck during Jahiliyyah).

Being superstitious about the month of Safar falls under forbidden pessimism that discourages from acting and is one of the acts of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic time of ignorance) that was annulled by Islam. (10)

The Permanent Committee was asked about a du3aa’ (11) distributed and said in Safar (asking Allaah by Tawassul of  Al-Hasan, Al-Husayn, the honor of the Messenger & names of Allaah). They replied:

This is an innovated Du3aa’ in terms of being specified to be said at a certain time. It also includes Tawassul (supplicating to Allaah by virtue of the status of…) by Al-Hasan, Al-Husayn, the honor of the Messenger and names which are given to Allaah although they are stated neither in the Qur’aan nor in the Sunnah. It is not permissible to name Allaah  except with what He has named Himself in His Book or revealed to His Messenger Muhammad.

Tawassul by people or by the virtue of their status in Du3aa’ is a Bid3ah (innovation in religion), and every Bid3ah is misguidance and a means to Shirk. Accordingly, the circulation of this Du3aa’ should be prevented in addition to getting rid of any of its copies. It seems that it is innovated by the Shiites. (12)

The Permanent Committee was asked about a specific 4 Rak3aat prayer that is prayed on the last Wednesday of Safar (13), that if prayed in specific manner, Allaah protect him by His generosity from all the calamities that come down on that day, and they will not come around him.

They replied:

We do not know of any basis in the Qur’aan or in the Sunnah for the naafil prayer mentioned in the question. We have no proof that any one among the salaf of this ummah or the righteous people of its later generations did this naafil prayer. Rather it is a reprehensible innovation.

It was narrated that the Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “Whoever does an action which is not in accordance with this matter of ours [Islam], will have it rejected.” And he said: “Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours that is not part of it, will have it rejected.”

Whoever attributes this prayer and the things that are mentioned with it to the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam or to any of the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) is fabricating serious lies, and Allaah will give him the punishment for liars which he deserves. (14)

Shaykh Muhammad ibn 3Abd al-Salaam al-Shuqayri said:

The ignorant have the habit of writing down the verses of salaam such as “Salaam (peace) be upon Nooh (from Us) among the 3Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!””  (soorah As-Saafaat 37:79) etc. on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar, then they put them in vessels and drink it and seek blessings from it, and they give it as gifts to one another, because they believe that this will take away bad things. This is a false belief and a blameworthy superstition, a reprehensible innovation which must be denounced by everyone who sees it. (15)

مسلم (2565) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ

تُفْتَحُ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَ الِاثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ فَيُغْفَرُ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا إِلَّا رَجُلًا كَانَتْ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ أَخِيهِ شَحْنَاءُ فَيُقَالُ : أَنْظِرُوا هَذَيْنِ حَتَّى يَصْطَلِحَا ، أَنْظِرُوا هَذَيْنِ حَتَّى يَصْطَلِحَا ، أَنْظِرُوا هَذَيْنِ حَتَّى يَصْطَلِحَا

It was narrated from Aboo Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wassallam said:

The gates of Jannah are opened on Mondays and Thursdays, and every slave (of Allaah) who does not associate any partners with Allaah is forgiven, except a man between whom and his brother there is some grudge (1)

It is said, “Wait for these two until they reconcile, wait for these two until they reconcile, wait for these two until they reconcile.’” (2)

Ibn Raslaan said:

It seems that if one of them seeks to reconcile with the other but he does not accept it, the one who seeks reconciliation will be forgiven. (3)

عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ

لَا يَحِلُّ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ أَخَاهُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ يَلْتَقِيَانِ فَيَصُدُّ هَذَا وَيَصُدُّ هَذَا وَخَيْرُهُمَا الَّذِي يَبْدَأُ بِالسَّلَامِ

It is narrated from Abu Ayyoob radiAllaahu 3Anhu that the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wassallam said:

It is not permissible for a Muslim to forsake his brother for more than three days, each of them turning away from the other when they meet. The better of them is the first to greet the other with salaam.” (4)

imagesAl-Nawawi said:

“The better of them is the first to greet the other with salaam” – this is the evidence for the view of al-Shaafa3ee and Maalik and those who agree with them, that the greeting of salaam ends the forsaking, and removes sin from the person (5)

Ruling on Wiping the Neck during Wudoo’

Bismillaah - CopyProphet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

شَرُّ الأُمُورِ مُحْدَثَاتُهَا وَكُلُّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلالَةٌ

“The worst of matters are those which are newly-invented, and every innovation is a going astray.” (1)

He SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam also said:

مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي دِينِنَا مَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ

“Whoever introduces anything into our religion that is not part of it, will have it rejected.” (2)

Widespread AHadeeth about Wiping of the Neck:

These are widespread ahadeeth on internet & different social media forums, about wiping of the neck during wudoo’.

1).Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “Wiping the neck is a protection from the yoke (or chains – al-ghull)”  (3)

Al-Nawawi said about this hadeeth “these are not the words of the Prophet” (4). He (Al-Nawawi) & Shaykh Al-Banee graded this hadeeth as Fabricated (mawdoo3) (5)

2). It is narrated from Talhah ibn Musarraf, from his father, from his grandfather, which says that he saw the Messenger of AllaahSallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam wiping his head until he reached the back of his head and the first part of the neck”

This is classed as da3eef by al-Albaani in Da3eef Abi Dawood. (6)

Fatawaa of Scholars about Wiping the Neck:

The majority of scholars are of the opinion that such a practice is not likable.  Many scholars even think that wiping over the neck is Bida3h (bad innovation).  This is the opinion of the Shafi3ee.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said:

There is no saheeh report from the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam which says that he wiped his neck during wudoo’, rather no such thing has been narrated from him in any saheeh hadeeth. Rather the saheeh ahaadeeth which describe the wudoo’ of the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam do not mention that he wiped his neck. Hence the majority of scholars, such as Maalik, al-Shaafa3ee and Ahmed did not regard that as mustahabb. Those who say that it is mustahabb rely on a report narrated from Abu Hurayrah radi Allaahu 3Anhu or a da3eef (weak) hadeeth which says that he wiped his head until he reached the back of his head. Such reports cannot be relied on, and it does not contradict what is indicated by the sound ahaadeeth. Whoever does not wipe his neck, his wudoo’ is valid according to scholarly consensus” (7)

Imaam an-Nawawee (rahimahullaah):

Wiping the neck during Wudhu is not from the Sunnah, rather it is an innovation. (8) (9)

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

There is no saheeh hadeeth from the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam about wiping the neck at all.” (10)

Shaykh Ibn Baaz said:

It is not mustahabb or prescribed in sharee3ah to wipe the neck, rather the head and the ears only are to be wiped, as is indicated by the Qur’aan and Sunnah.” (11)

Shaykh al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) said:

I do not see it permissible to wipe ones neck during wudhu, except that a daleel is provided that is authentic, showing its legislation and since there is none it should not be done.(12)

The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Iftaa replied:

 There is no proof in either the Book of Allaah or the Sunnah of His Messenger SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam that wiping the neck is part of wudoo’, so it is not a prescribed part of wudoo’. (13)

Al-Nawawi mentioned a difference of opinion among the companions of al-Shaafa3ee (may Allaah have mercy on him) concerning wiping the neck in wudoo’. Then he said: This is a summary of what they said, and they had four views on this matter, one of which is that it is Sunnah to wipe it with new water. The second is that it is mustahabb and cannot be said to be Sunnah. The third is that it is mustahabb to use the water left from wiping the head and ears. The fourth is that it is neither Sunnah nor mustahabb.
The fourth view is the one that is correct. Hence al-Shaafa3ee (may Allaah have mercy on him) did not mention it, and neither did our earlier companions. It was not mentioned by most of the scholars. There is no proof of that from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Fasting Taasoo3aa’ with 3Aashooraa’

Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said:

For fasting the day of 3Aashooraa’, I hope that Allaah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” (1)

Mustahabb (encouraged) to fast Taasoo3aa’ with 3Aashooraa’:

3Abd-Allaah ibn 3Abbaas radi Allaahu 3Anhuma said: “When the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam fasted on 3Aashooraa’ and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians’

The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said:

If I live to see the next year, in-shaa’-Allaah, we will fast on the ninth day too.’

But it so happened that the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam passed away before the next year came.” (2)

Al-Shaafa3ee and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq and others said:

It is mustahabb [recommended] to fast both the ninth and the tenth, because the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam fasted the tenth and intended to fast the ninth.

Wisdom Behind Fasting Taasoo3aa’ with 3Aashooraa’

If one were to ask, what is the wisdom behind fasting the ninth as well as the tenth?  The answer is:

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The scholars among our companions and others said that there are several reasons for recommending fasting on the ninth day (Taasoo3aa’):

1. The intention behind it is to be different from the Jews who limit their fasting to the tenth day. This was narrated from Ibn 3Abbaas.

2. The intention was to join the fast of 3Aashooraa to another day, just as it is not allowed to fast on a Friday on its own [but it is allowed if one fasts the day before or the day after as well].

3. The idea is to be on the safe side and make sure one is fasting on the tenth, in case the moon sighting was not accurate and what people think is the ninth is actually the tenth.

The strongest of these reasons is in order to be different from the People of the Book.

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyah said:

The Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam forbade resembling the People of the Book in many ahaadeeth. For example, he said concerning 3Aashooraa: “If I live until next year I will certainly fast the ninth.” (3)

Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, commenting on the hadeeth “If I live until next year I will certainly fast the ninth”:

His concern to fast the ninth may be understood as meaning that he would not limit himself to that, rather that he would add it to the tenth, either to be on the safe side, or to be different from the Jews and Christians, which is more likely to be correct; this is what may be understood from some of the reports narrated by Muslim.” (4)

Based on this, there are different ways of fasting 3Aashooraa, the least of which is to fast the tenth only, but it is better to fast the ninth as well. The more one fasts in Muharram, the better.

 Fasting Only On the Day of 3Aashooraa’:

Shaykh al-Islaam said:

Fasting on the day of 3Aashoraa’ is an expiation for a year, and it is not makrooh to fast only that day”. (5)

Ibn Hajar al-Haytami said: 

There is nothing wrong with fasting only on 3Aashooraa’.” (6)

The Permanent Committee for Islaamic Research and Fataawa said:

It is permissible to fast the day of 3Aashooraa’. (tenth day of Muharram) just one day, however, it is better to fast the day before it or the day after it (also)”. (7)
