The blessed days of the Dhul-Hijjah

Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said: “The best days in this worldly life are the (first) ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah).” (1)

Preparing For Ramadaan:

Shaykh Salih Al-Munajjid gave a detailed practical advice about how can we prepare ourselves for the arrival of Ramadaan. He said:

Among the best ways of preparing for the month of Ramadaan are:

1. Sincere repentance:

This is obligatory at all times, but because of the approach of a great and blessed month, it is even more important to hasten to repent from sins between you and your Lord, and between you and other people by giving them their rights, so that when the blessed month begins you may busy yourself with acts of worship with a clean heart and peace of mind. Allaah says:

وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

(interpretation of the meaning):

“And all of you beg Allaah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful” (1)

It was narrated from al-Agharr ibn Yasaar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said:

“O people, repent to Allaah for I repent to Him one hundred times each day.” (2)

2. Du3aa’ (supplication):

It was narrated from some of the salaf that they used to pray to Allaah for six months that they would live until Ramadaan, then they would pray for five months afterwards that He would accept it from them.

The Muslim should ask his Lord to let him live until Ramadaan with a strong religious commitment and good physical health, and he should ask Him to help him obey Him during the month, and ask Him to accept his good deeds from Him.

3. Rejoicing at the approach of the blessed month:

The arrival of Ramadaan is one of the great blessings that Allaah bestows upon His Muslim slave, because Ramadaan is one of the occasions of good in which the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed. It is the month of the Qur’aan and of decisive battles in the history of our religionAllaah says:

قُلْ بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَبِرَحْمَتِهِ فَبِذَلِكَ فَلْيَفْرَحُوا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ

(interpretation of the meaning):

“Say: ‘In the Bounty of Allaah, and in His Mercy (i.e. Islam and the Qur’aan); —therein let them rejoice.’ That is better than what (the wealth) they amass”  (3)

4. Discharging the duty of any outstanding obligatory fasts

It was narrated that Abu Salamah said: I heard 3Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) say:

“I would owe fasts from the previous Ramadaan and I would not be able to make them up except in Sha3baan. (4)

Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

From her keenness to do that in Sha3baan it may be understood that it is not permissible to delay making them up until another Ramadaan begins. (5)

5 – Seeking knowledge in order to be able to follow the rulings on fasting and to understand the virtues of Ramadaan. (click Ramadaan resources / E-Books)

6 – Hastening to complete any tasks that may distract the Muslim from doing acts of worship. (click Time Management Tips for Ramadaan )

7 – Sitting with one’s family members – wife and children – to tell them of the rulings on fasting and encourage the young ones to fast.

8 – Preparing some books which can be read at home or given to the Imaam of the Masjid to read to the people during Ramadaan.

9 – Fasting some of the month of Sha3baan in preparation for fasting Ramadaan.

It was narrated that 3Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said:

The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam used to fast until we said: He will not break his fast, and he used not to fast until we said: He will not fast. And I never saw the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam complete a month of fasting except Ramadaan, and I never saw him fast more in any month than in Sha3baan. (6)

It was narrated that Usaamah ibn Zayd said: “I said: O Messenger of Allaah, I do not see you fasting in any month as you fast in Sha3baan? He said:

“That is a month that people neglect between Rajab and Ramadaan, but it is a month in which people’s deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds and I would like my deeds to be taken up when I am fasting.” (7)

This hadeeth explains the wisdom behind fasting in Sha3baan, which is that it is a month in which deeds are taken up (to Allaah). Some of the scholars mentioned another reason, which is that this fasting is like Sunnah prayers offered beforehand in relation to the obligatory prayer; they prepare the soul for performing the obligatory action, and the same may be said of fasting Sha3baan before Ramadaan.

10 – Reading Qur’aan

Salamah ibn Kuhayl said: It was said that Sha3baan was the month of the Qur’aan readers.

When Sha3baan began, 3Amr ibn Qays would close his shop and free his time for reading Qur’aan.

Abu Bakr al-Balkhi said:

The month of Rajab is the month for planting, the month of Sha3baan is the month of irrigating the crops, and the month of Ramadaan is the month of harvesting the crops.

He also said:

The likeness of the month of Rajab is that of the wind, the likeness of Sha3baan is that of the clouds and the likeness of Ramadaan is that of the rain; whoever does not plant and sow in Rajab, and does not irrigate in Sha3baan, how can he reap in Ramadaan?

Now Rajab has passed, so what will you do in Sha3baan if you are seeking Ramadaan? This is how your Prophet and the early generations of the ummah were in this blessed month, so what will you do?

And Allaah is the Source of strength.

Uttering the Intention (Niyyah) Loudly

The intention (niyyah) is essential for all acts of worship; no act of worship is valid without the intention.

The place for the intention is the heart, and speaking it out loud is bid3ah. It was not proven that the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam or his companions spoke the intention for any act of worship out loud. (1)

Uttering the Intention (Niyyah)

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah replied to a question asked about the intention:

The intention of purifying oneself by doing wudoo’ ghusl or tayammum, of praying, fasting, paying zakaah, offering kafaarah (expiation) and other acts of worship does not need to be uttered verbally, according to the consensus of the imaams of Islaam. Rather the place of intention is the heart, according to the consensus among them. (2)

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Speaking the intention is a bid3ah (innovation) and doing so loudly is even more sinful. Rather the Sunnah is to make one’s intention in the heart, because Allaah knows that which is secret and what is even more hidden. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say: Will you inform Allaah of your religion while Allaah knows all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth?” [al-Hujuraat 49:16]

It was not narrated from the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam or the Sahaabah or any of the most prominent imams that they spoke the intention out loud. From this we may understand that it is not prescribed, rather it is an innovation that has been introduced into the religion. And Allaah is the Source of strength. (3)

niyyah in the heart

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

When the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam stood up to pray, he would say: “Allaahu akbar,” and he did not say anything before that, or utter the intention (niyyah) out loud at all. He did not say, “I am going to pray such-and-such a prayer, facing the qiblah, four rak3ahs, as an imaam or following an imaam.” And he did not say “ada’an (on time)” or “qadaa’an (making up a missed prayer)” or “fard al-waqt (the obligatory prayer of this time).” These are all bid3ahs which were not narrated by any scholar with any isnaad, be it saheeh, da3eef, musnad or mursal … Neither was this narrated from any of the Prophet’s companions, and none of the Taabi3een or the four imaams described it as mustahabb. (4)

niyyah uttering

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen said:

With regard to uttering the intention for actions other than Hajj or 3Umrah, this is something which it is well known is not prescribed. It is not Sunnah for a person to say, when he wants to do wudoo’, “O Allah, I am going to do wudoo’” or “O Allah, I intend to do wudoo’”, or when he wants to pray to say “O Allah, I am going to pray” or “O Allah, I intend to pray.” None of that is prescribed. And the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam. ” (5)

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah also said:

No one has mentioned any difference of opinion concerning this matter, except that some of the later followers of al-Shaafa3ee expressed approval of that, but some of the leaders of this madhhab said that this was wrong. But in the dispute among the scholars as to whether it is mustahabb to utter one’s intention, there are two points of view. Some of the companions of Abu Haneefah, al-Shaafa3ee and Ahmad said that it is mustahabb to utter the intention so as to make it stronger.

Some of the companions of Maalik, Ahmad and others said that it is not mustahabb to utter it, because that is a bid’ah (innovation). It was not narrated that the Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam or his Sahaabah did it or that he commanded anyone among his ummah to utter the intention. That is not known from any of the Muslims. If that had been prescribed then the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam and his companions would not have neglected it, as it has to do with worship which the ummah does every day and night. This is the more correct view.

Indeed, uttering the intention is a of irrational thinking and falling short in religious commitment. In terms of falling short in religious commitment, that is because it is bid’ah (an innovation). In terms of irrational thinking, that is because it is like a person who wants to eat some food saying, “I intend to put my hand in this vessel, take out a morsel of food, put it in my mouth and chew it, then swallow it, and eat until I have had my fill.” This is sheer foolishness and ignorance.

 The imaams are agreed that speaking the intention out loud and repeating it is not prescribed in Islaam, rather the person who has made this a habit should be disciplined and told not to worship Allaah by following bid3ah and not to disturb others by raising his voice. And Allaah knows best.  (6)

intention niyyah

The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta’ said:

Uttering the intention out loudly or secretly in Salah, Wudu’, and other acts of worship is impermissible, for the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam did not prescribe this either by saying or action, also because the place of intention is not the tongue, but the heart. You should start your prayer whether it is Fard or Nafilah by saying – Allahu Akbar  and start your Wudoo by Tasmiyah to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam.

You should intend practicing the acts of worship that you want by heart, except in case of Hajj and 3Umrah , for it is prescribed to utter the rites of Hajj or 3Umrah by saying: Allahomma Labayk Hajj or (Labayk 3Umrah). (7)

Intention (Niyyah) for Hajj & 3Umrah:

Shaykh al-Fawzaan  said:

“… Except in two cases. The first case is when entering ihram for Hajj or 3Umrah, in which case one says “Labbayka 3Umratan (here I am for 3Umrah)” or “Labbayka Hajjan (here I am for Hajj)”.

The second case is when slaughtering the hadiy or udhiyah or 3aqeeqah, when one should say Bismillaah and state which type it is, whether it is 3aqeeqah or ‘udhiyah or hadiy, and on whose behalf it is being offered. So he should say: In the name of Allaah and on behalf of So and so” or “In the name of Allaah on my behalf and on behalf of my household,” then he should slaughter it.

In these two cases it is prescribed to utter the intention out loud; in all other cases it is not permissible to utter the intention out loud for any act of worship, prayer or anything else. (8)

The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta’ said:

You should intend practicing the acts of worship that you want by heart, except in case of Hajj and 3Umrah , for it is prescribed to utter the rites of Hajj or 3Umrah by saying: Allaahumma (O Allaah) (Labayk [Here I am! At your service] Hajj) or (Labayk 3Umrah).

The same goes for Hady (sacrificial animal offered by pilgrims) and Udhiyah (sacrificial animal offered by non-pilgrims), as it is prescribed for the person offering Hady or Udhiyah to utter after Tasmiyah. (9)

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen said:

If a person says “Labbayka 3umratan (Here I am for 3Umrah)” or “Laybbayka hajjan (Here I am for Hajj)”, that does not come under the heading of forming the intention, because he formed the intention before that. Hence it is not prescribed to say, “O Allaah, I am going to do 3Umrah” or “O Allaah, I am going to do Hajj.” Rather you should form the retention in your heart and recite the Talbiyah out loud.

With regard to uttering the intention for actions other than Hajj or 3Umrah, this is something which it is well known is not prescribed. It is not Sunnah for a person to say, when he wants to do wudoo’, “O Allaah, I am going to do wudoo’” or “O Allaah, I intend to do wudoo’”, or when he wants to pray to say “O Allaah, I am going to pray” or “O Allaah, I intend to pray.” None of that is prescribed. And the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam.” (10)

 Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen also said regarding udhiyah:

This is not uttering the attention, because if the one who is offering the sacrifice says, “This is on my behalf and on behalf of my household,” he is stating what is in his heart. He has not said, “O Allaah, I want to offer a sacrifice,” as would be said by the one who wants to utter his intention. Rather he is only expressing what is in his heart. The intention was already there, from the time he brought the animal, lay it down and slaughtered it, so he had already formed the intention.” (11)

An Amusing Story:

Shaykh Ibn 3Uthaymeen mentioned an amusing story in his sharh of 40 Nawawee ahadeeth when speaking about saying intention out loud:

It was told that a layman from Najd was in al Masjid al Haraam, wanting to pray Dhuhr, and there was a man beside him who only knows how to do niyyah (intention) out loud, so when it was iqaamah, the man said: “O Allaah! I intend to pray Dhuhr prayer, 4 rak3ahs for the sake of Allaah, behind the imaam of the Masjid al Haraam”.

 And when he wanted to make takbirat al Ihram, the layman said to him: “Be patient O man, you still need to say the date, the day, the month and the year” so the man was in wonderment.” (12)

Dhul Hijjah Checklist

The month of Dhul-Hijjah is just round the corner. The first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best days of the year. Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said about these days:

There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days.”

The people asked, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?” He said, 

“Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.”

Some Common mistakes in Ramadaan

Taking Ramadaan as a ritual:

For many of us Ramadaan has lost its spirituality and has become more of a ritual than a form of 3Ibaadah. We fast from morning to night just because everyone around us is fasting too. We forget that it’s a time to purify our hearts and our souls from all evil….we forget to make du3aa’, forget to beseech Allaah to forgive us and ask Him to save us from the Fire of Hell. Sure we stay away from food and drink but that’s about all. Although the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Jibreel said to me, ‘May Allaah rub his nose in the dust, that person to who Ramadaan comes and his sins are not forgiven,’ and I said, ‘Ameen’….” (1)

Fasting but not praying

Realize that the fasting of one who does not pray WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. This is because not praying constitutes kufr as the Prophet Sall-Allaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his giving up prayer.” (2)

In fact, NONE of his good deeds will be accepted; rather, they are all annulled. The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

Whoever forsakes ‘Asr prayer, his deeds are in vain.” (3)

This hadeeth indicates that in the case of one who does not pray, Allaah will not accept any deed from him, so the one who does not pray will not benefit at all from his deeds, and no good deeds of his will ascend to Allaah. (4)

Too much stress on food and drink

For some people, the entire month of Ramadaan revolves around food. They spend the ENTIRE day planning, cooking, shopping and thinking about only food, instead of concentrating on Salaah, Qur’aan and other acts of worship. All they can think of is FOOD, so much so that they turn the month of ‘fasting’ into the month of ‘feasting’. Come Iftaar time, their table is a sight to see, with the multitudes and varieties of food, sweets and drinks. They are missing the very purpose of fasting, and thus, increase in their greed and desires instead of learning to control them.

And remember, too much food is also a kind of waste & extravagance.

وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ

“…..and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al-Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance)” [soorah al-A3raaf , v:31]

Spending all day cooking

Some of the sisters (either by their own choice or forced by their husbands) are cooking ALL day and ALL night, so that by the end of the day, they are too tired to even pray 3Ishaa’, let alone pray Taraaweeh or Tahajjud; too exhausted to even read Qur’aan.

This is the month of mercy and forgiveness, du3aa’ and 3Ibaadah, to increase in your taqwa and to improve your relationship with Allaah. And how can you do that if you spend all your time in the kitchen cooking? So turn off that stove and turn on your Eemaan!

Eating too much

Some people stuff themselves at Suhoor until they are ready to burst, because they think this is the way to not feel hungry during the day and some people eat at Iftaar, like there is no tomorrow, trying to ‘make up for the food they missed.’ However, this is completely against the Sunnah. Remember, moderation is the key to everything.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. If you must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for air. (5)

Besides, too much food distracts a person from many deeds of obedience and worship, makes him lazy.

Sufyaan al-Thawri (may Allaah have mercy on his) said: If you want your body to be healthy and to sleep less, then eat less.  

Eating too much also makes the heart heedless. It was said to Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him):

Does a man find any softness and humility in his heart when he is full?

He said, I do not think so.” (6)

Sleeping all day

Some people spend their entire day (or a major part of it) ‘sleeping away their fast’. Is this what is really required of us during this noble month?

These people are also missing the purpose of fasting and just falling prey to laziness and lethargy. All it needs is to exert a little self-control. For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is nothing, but negligence on his part.

The Standing Committee said regarding this: “For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is a kind of negligence on his part, especially since the month of Ramadaan is a special time and the Muslim should strive to benefit from it by reading Qur’aan a great deal, seeking provision and acquiring knowledge.” (7)

Fasting but not giving up evil

Some of us fast but do not give up lying, cursing, fighting, backbiting, etc. and some of us fast but do not give up cheating, stealing, dealing in haraam, buying lotto tickets, selling alcohol, committing fornication, etc. and all kinds of impermissible things without realizing that the purpose of fasting is to not stay away from food and drink; rather the aim behind it is to fear Allaah.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [soorah al-Baqarah 2:183]

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

“Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it and ignorant conduct, Allaah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.” (8)

In another narration:

Whoever does not give up obscene talk and lying, Allaah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.” (9)

Wasting time

The month of Ramadaan is a precious, precious time, so much so that Allaah calls this month أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ

“Ayyaamum Ma3doodaat” (A fixed number of days) (10)

Before we know it, this month of mercy and forgiveness will be over. We should try and spend every moment possible in the worship of Allaah so that we can make the most of this blessing. However, there are some of us who waste away their day playing video games, or worse still, watching TV, movies or even listening to music.

Subhaan Allaah! Trying to obey Allaah by DISOBEYING him!

Make the best of this Ramadaan (see here & here). who knows this could be our last Ramadan.

Smoking

Smoking is haraam (forbidden) in Islaam whether during Ramadaan or outside of it (11) as it is one of al-Khabaa’ith (evil things). And this includes ALL kinds of ‘smoking material’ whether it is cigars, cigarettes, pipes,’Sheesha’, hookah or even worse than that. (12)

وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ

“He allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (all good and lawful things), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (all evil and unlawful things) (13)

Smoking is harmful, not only to the one smoking, but also to the ones around him. It is also a means of wasting one’s wealth.

The Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.”

& Smoking invalidates the fast. (14)

Fasting Taasoo3aa’ with 3Aashooraa’

Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said:

For fasting the day of 3Aashooraa’, I hope that Allaah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” (1)

Mustahabb (encouraged) to fast Taasoo3aa’ with 3Aashooraa’:

3Abd-Allaah ibn 3Abbaas radi Allaahu 3Anhuma said: “When the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam fasted on 3Aashooraa’ and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians’

The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said:

If I live to see the next year, in-shaa’-Allaah, we will fast on the ninth day too.’

But it so happened that the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam passed away before the next year came.” (2)

Al-Shaafa3ee and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq and others said:

It is mustahabb [recommended] to fast both the ninth and the tenth, because the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam fasted the tenth and intended to fast the ninth.

Wisdom Behind Fasting Taasoo3aa’ with 3Aashooraa’

If one were to ask, what is the wisdom behind fasting the ninth as well as the tenth?  The answer is:

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The scholars among our companions and others said that there are several reasons for recommending fasting on the ninth day (Taasoo3aa’):

1. The intention behind it is to be different from the Jews who limit their fasting to the tenth day. This was narrated from Ibn 3Abbaas.

2. The intention was to join the fast of 3Aashooraa to another day, just as it is not allowed to fast on a Friday on its own [but it is allowed if one fasts the day before or the day after as well].

3. The idea is to be on the safe side and make sure one is fasting on the tenth, in case the moon sighting was not accurate and what people think is the ninth is actually the tenth.

The strongest of these reasons is in order to be different from the People of the Book.

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyah said:

The Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam forbade resembling the People of the Book in many ahaadeeth. For example, he said concerning 3Aashooraa: “If I live until next year I will certainly fast the ninth.” (3)

Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, commenting on the hadeeth “If I live until next year I will certainly fast the ninth”:

His concern to fast the ninth may be understood as meaning that he would not limit himself to that, rather that he would add it to the tenth, either to be on the safe side, or to be different from the Jews and Christians, which is more likely to be correct; this is what may be understood from some of the reports narrated by Muslim.” (4)

Based on this, there are different ways of fasting 3Aashooraa, the least of which is to fast the tenth only, but it is better to fast the ninth as well. The more one fasts in Muharram, the better.

 Fasting Only On the Day of 3Aashooraa’:

Shaykh al-Islaam said:

Fasting on the day of 3Aashoraa’ is an expiation for a year, and it is not makrooh to fast only that day”. (5)

Ibn Hajar al-Haytami said: 

There is nothing wrong with fasting only on 3Aashooraa’.” (6)

The Permanent Committee for Islaamic Research and Fataawa said:

It is permissible to fast the day of 3Aashooraa’. (tenth day of Muharram) just one day, however, it is better to fast the day before it or the day after it (also)”. (7)

Virtues of the Day of 3Arafah

Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam was asked about fasting on the Day of 3Arafah. He said:

 “It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.”

FASTING ON THE DAY OF ARAFAH

Suggested program for 3Arafah:

1. Sleep early the night before to strengthen yourself for the special day.

2. Wake up well before Fajr for suhoor.

3. Make wudoo’, while consciously remembering that your sins are being washed away till the last drop of water. (1)

4. Pray at least 4 rak3aat of Qiyaam (2) and make du3aa’ for your deen & dunya & the Muslims in your sujood (3). Cry to Allaah, showing Him humility & ask Him to give you Tawfeeq on this great day.

Thank Him for making you of those who would experience this special occasion.

5. Spend some time (10-15 minutes at least) making Istighfaar before Fajr, to be like the righteous whom Allaah described as “seeking forgiveness before dawn.” (4)

6. Repeat after the Fajr adhaan & make du3aa’. (Accepted time of Du3aa’) (5)

7. Pray Fajr. Sit in your prayer place and do your morning Adhkar. Make Tasbeeh, Tahleel, Tahmeed, & Takbeer. And as the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam advised.

Increase in لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له ، له الملك ، وله الحمد ، وهو على كل شيء قدير

“la ilaha illallah, wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulk wa lahul hamd, wa huwa ala kulli shay’in qadeer.” (6)

8. 15 minutes after sunrise pray 2 rak3aat of shurooq. This all amounts to the reward of a complete Hajj & 3Umrah. So do not waste it! (7)

9. If you’re able to stay awake by all means, do so and do not waste a single minute. If you need to sleep, take a nap for an hour with the conscious intention of energizing yourself for the worship of Allaah, so that even your sleep will be rewarded!

10. When you wake up, make wudoo’ and pray at least 4 rakaat of Duhaa. (8)

11. Then recite lots of Qur’aan and make the dhikr mentioned above in breaks in between.

(Make dhikr after Dhuhr as you prepare food or as you do whatever responsibilities are absolutely necessary).

12. After 3Asr, say the evening adhkar. Then recite Qur’aan again till about an hour before Maghrib.

13. At that point, make LOTS of du3aa’ till Maghrib, while having Yaqeen (certainty) that Allaah will answer. (Preparing a du3aa’ list ahead of time helps!)

Beg that the day will not come to an end except that Allaah has forgiven you all your sins and written you of those He has freed from the Fire. Don’t forget du3aa’ for the Muslims suffering all over the world.

14. Remember as you break your fast that your du3aa’ at that moment is accepted.

May Allaah subhaanahu wa ta3aala grant us all Tawfeeq on that day. Aameen

(7) Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allaah until the sun rises, then prays two rak3aat, will have a reward like that of Hajj and 3Umrah, complete, complete, complete.” (Tirmidhi (586), from Anas ibn Maalik- classed as hasan was al-Albaani  in Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhi)
(8) Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “Whoever prays two rak3aat of Duhaa will not be recorded as being among the heedless,and whoever prays four rak3aat (of Duhaa) will be recorded among the worshipers..” (Shaykh Al-Albani graded this hadeeth as Hasan in Saheeh At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb)

Fasting on 3Arafah if it Falls on Friday

Fasting On Jumu3ah (Friday):

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he said: “I heard the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam say:

“None of you should fast on a Friday unless he fasts the day before or the day after”.’ (1)

Fasting on 3Arafah if It Coincides with Friday:

Shaykh 3Abdul-3Azeez bin 3Abdullaah Aal ash-Shaykh was asked the following question:

Q: If the day of 3Arafah (the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah) was to coincide with Friday is it permissible to single it out with fasting (i.e. by not fasting a day along with it)? May Allaah reward you with good.

He replied:

Fasting Friday is forbidden if the intent is the day of Friday itself;  i.e. singling out the day of Friday; so one must fast a day before it or a day after it.

As for it (Friday) coinciding with a day that is obligatory to fast, or (if Friday coincided) with fasting the six days of Shawwaal, or with fasting the 9th or 10th day of Muharram, or with fasting the day of 3Arafah, then there is nothing to prevent him from that (fasting Friday by itself); as long as he is not in a state of Ihraam performing Hajj. ” (2)

Shaykh ibn Baz (rahimahullaah) was asked:

Q: The day of 3Arafah came on Friday, and I fasted on Friday which was the day of 3Arafah, but I did not fast on Thursday; so is there any sin upon me?

He answered:

We hope there is no sin upon you. This is because you did not intend to single out this day for fasting; rather you only fasted this day because it was the day of 3Arafah.

But if you would have fasted Thursday along with it, it would have been safer and less doubtful.

This is because the Messenger sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam prohibited singling out Friday for fasting as it relates to the one observing and optional fast. And you were observing an optional fast. Therefore if you would have fasted Thursday along with it, with would have been safer and less doubtful even if your intention was to fast because it was 3Arafah.

But for the believer to investigate so he can be in agreement with the commands of the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam is safer and less doubtful.

As for fasting (Friday) intending to do so because it is a virtuous day, then this is not permissible because the Messenger prohibited that.

But if you fast this day because it is the day of 3Arafah then we hope there will be nothing upon you. But if the person takes precaution and fast on Thursday along with Friday, this will be safer. (3)

The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Iftaa’ was asked:

Q: Is it permissible to observe Sawm on the Day of 3Arafah alone if it happens to be on a Friday? Or, should a person observe Sawm on a day preceding or succeeding it, bearing in mind that the former case conflicts with the Hadeeth prohibiting the observance of Sawm on Friday alone?

They replied:

It is permissible to observe Sawm on the Day of 3Arafah alone if it happens to be on a Friday without observing Sawm on a day preceding or succeeding it as the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam is authentically reported to have urged people to observe Sawm on this day highlighting its superiority and the great reward for observing Sawm on it.

The Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa sallam said: Fasting the Day of 3Arafah forgives the sins of two years: the previous and the following…”

This Hadeeth specifies the general meaning of the Hadeeth that readsNone of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before or after it”.

Accordingly, the general prohibition understood from this Hadeeth should be understood in the context of observing Sawm on Friday for it merely being Friday.

However, observing Sawm on Friday for another purpose recommended by Shari3ah is permissible and not prohibited even if Sawm is observed on Friday alone. If Sawm is observed on a day preceding or succeeding it, it will be a more precautionary implementation of the two Hadeeths which will have the effect of the increase of the reward. (4)

Ibn Hajar said in Fath Al-Baari:

(after mentioning the prohibition of singling out Jumu3ah for fasting)

“Excluded from this prohibition is one who fasts the day before or after, or if it coincides with days that he habitually fasts, such as one who fasts al-Ayyaam al-Beed (the 13th, 14th and 15th of each hijri month), or who has the habit of fasting a specific day such as the Day of 3Arafah,  and it coincides with a Friday…. (5)

Similarly, if 3Ashoorah or 3Arafah coincides with a Friday, he may fast, because his intention is to fast 3Ashoorah or 3Arafah, not to fast on a Friday. (6)

It is Mustahabb to fast three days each month. There are many ahadeeth, concerning the virtues of fasting 3 days, every month.

Advice of the Prophet:

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah radi-Allaahu 3Anhu said: “My close friend (the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam) advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month, praying Duhaa and going to sleep after Witr”. (1)

Its like Fasting For a life-Time:

3Abd-Allaah ibn 3Amr ibn al-3Aaas Radi-Allaahu 3Anhu said: The Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said to me:

“It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month, because for every good deed you will have (the reward of) ten like it, so that will be like fasting for a lifetime”. (2)

Which Days of the Month To Fast:

Mu3aadhah al-3Adawiyyah asked 3Aa’ishah, the wife of the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam, “Did the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam fast three days of every month?”

She said, “Yes.”

She said to her: “Which days of the month did he fast?”

She said, “He did not mind which days of the month he would fast.” (3)

Fasting Ayyaam Al-Beed:

Beed  is the plural of Abyad which means white. Three days of 13, 14 and 15 of lunar month are called “Al-Ayyaam-ul-Beed” for the reason that their nights are bright because of the moonlight. The moon begins to diminish gradually after these days.

Jareer ibn 3Abd-Allaah radi-Allaahu 3Anhu said that, the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: “Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and Ayyaam al-Beed are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.” (4)

Abu Dharr radi-Allaahu 3Anhu said: The Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said to me: “If you fast any part of the month, then fast the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.” (5) 

Fasting the 3 Fast Consecutively or Separately:

Shaykh 3Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked:

It was narrated in the hadeeth that the Prophet SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam advised Abu Hurayrah to fast three days of each month. When should these fasts be observed, and should they be one after the other?

He replied:

It is permissible to fast these days one after the other or separately, and they may be at the beginning of the month, or in the middle, or at the end. The matter is braod in scope, praise be to Allaah, because the Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam did not state any specific days.

3Aa’ishah radi Allaahu 3Anha was asked: “The Messenger of Allaah SallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam fast three days of each month? She said: Yes.

It was asked: In which part of the month did he fast? She said: He would not bother in which part of the month he would fast.

But the 13th, 14th & 15th are better, because these are Al–Ayyaam al-Beed. (6)

Winter Reminders

bismillah (2)“Indeed, winter is the spring of the believer because during it he enjoys himself in the gardens of obedience to (Allaah) and wanders in the fields of worship, and his heart strolls along in devotion to the acts of worship facilitated within it, just like the animals revel in the pastures of spring; so they put on weight and (the state of) their bodies improve.

Likewise, during winter the believer’s religion is improved through what Allaah has made easy of acts of obedience; for indeed the believer is able to fast the days of winter without difficulty or being troubled by hunger and thirst because its days of fasting are short and cold, and the difficulty in fasting is unnoticed. And it has been reported in Tirmidhee from the Prophet SallAllaahu 3alayhi wa sallam who said:

“Fasting in winter is an (easily acquired) booty.” (1)
